Resto frame bolt & nut finishes?!?!?

What do ya'll do for finishes (paint, plating, etc.) for your old frame bolts and nuts to prevent the old rusty look?

I'm doing a half frame off of the rear half of my '68 and would like to prevent all the nuts and bolts (like the shock, control arms, spring, etc bolts/nuts) from rusting.

Do you paint after assembly or plate before? Need some ideas.

I'm doing a full frame off on my truck and I am using stainless steel bolts.
But with you just doing the rear portion of your truck I can see why you
are using paint. I suppose I would paint the bolts after removing them,
however you may have to touch them up after using wrenches on them
after installing them.

I replaced all frame hardware with new plated steel fasteners of the same grade as the original. After installing them I paint them with eastwoods diamond clear satin for bare metal. I'm using all the original body bolts and cleaning them with eastwoods oxysolv down to bare metal and using their black oxide metal blackener and painting them with the "diamond clear" to seal the finish. They look great and are protected from rust.

I just got my bolt order yesterday. I got all Grade 8 yellow-zinc plated stuff: nuts, bolts, washers and all. I like the look of the yellow-zinc against the black frame. Coat me about $60 for all of it.

I went to the local hardware store and brought a box of various old frame bolts and a piece of paper with the quantities needed with me. $80 worth of grade 8 bolts later and I had everything I needed to build the entire chassis. They have held up fine so far, no rust.

Far cheaper than the hardware store is if you have a farm store nearby. They usually sell fasteners by the pound, cost is about 1/2-2/3 of by the piece. Atwoods, a chain out of Enid, OK sells Rockford bolts, made in the USA. The grade 5 is gold color cad plate, grade 8 are a funky blue that I paint over after installation.

Another tip is to use medium strength threadlocker. It not only helps to keep the fasteners together, it helps to stop the threads from corroding, making disassembly easier.

I got mine from the fastener supplier we use at work, Fastenal. I got the grade 8 gold cad, I love the gold against the black look

ive been using the same all grade 8 zinc coated as you and clear coating them for added protection. stainless steel doesnt have the strength does it? i got whole selection of stainless every size but their not grade 8, didnt know they came in grade 8 if they do?
