Help on Chevrolet front stamp pad #s???

My parents "other child" and his wife, have 1962 Bel Air 4door sedan, that is for sale. V-8,powerglide,71,382 miles, ran and drove good, when parked last year(they had a baby...).$2700.They got it from original owners son inlaw. It was suppose to be a 327.The # is F0730D.I checked various websites and as close as I could come, was a 283/powerglide,but a 1960 model.I could believe the 283 part, doubt the 1960 part. The listings seemed incomplete in this number range. Thanks Kirk

What are the casting numbers off the rear of the block right above the bellhousing? Driver's side number will be engine casting number, and the pass side numbers will be the date codes.

I have casting # book, usually can pin it down stamped # though, haven't gotten motivated yet to crawl up on the motor and scrape the vintage grease off,and do the contortions neceesary to read it."Family" members (who own it)can't even be bothered to hose it off even.

You won't need the casting number. It's positively a 283. The code "D" was used from 1958 thru 1964 for the powerglide version 283. (170hp for '62)

To verify if it's a 1962, you'll need to find date codes on it. Heads, intake and the block will all have a date code. (some other parts such as exhaust, water pump will too)

My '63 283 block has a date code cast into it on the rear corner, driver side near the spark plug wire retainer. (if memory serves correctly)

Lots of info for '62's on my site.

Feel free to post this car for sale on my forum's for sale section. http://www.348-409.com/forum/index.php?s=

It is not unusual to have a engine block pre-date the model year. If the other way around then it definitely would not be original motor for the car. Most of the time
it is only one year prior to model year, maybe a left over block GM used.
