hey everyone! I just won an auction for an 85 K30 single rear wheel which is going to provide lots of good parts for my '70. It has the dana 60 front, TH400, NP205 transfer case, and 14 bolt rear, but it is not supposed to be the full floater. I believe I can find a 14 bolt 10.5" ring gear full floater out of a 77-81 K20 or K30, or possibly a Suburban or C20 or C30. Does anybody know for sure what else came with these axles? I didn't get an engine with the truck, so I still have to find that. I am going to be looking for a 454, but first I have to recover from buying this truck, and move into our new house. But, I do have a lot of work to do with what I have! Does anybody know if you can "make" a full floater out of a semi-floater? I really would rather find a 10 1/2" ring gear full floater 14 bolt anyway, but I am curious. I am going to try and stick an unrebuilt 350 into the one ton for the winter and plow with it as I tear apart the '70. I am hoping to have the frame dipped in the spring, and start from there. That ought to be a full floater, I don't believe the 1 ton trucks came with the semi-floater.
You've got the ingredients to make an awesome 4wd!

Here's a pic of a full floater 14 bolt - note the large hub through the wheel, that is the what you look for to determine which type it is.

Thanks Jack. I found info at http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com/73-87specs.html that indicates the newer trucks used a smaller ring gear, and a semi-floating design. I haven't picked up the truck yet, so maybe I will get lucky. Who knows, maybe the truck was ordered with an upgraded axle or something. Anyhow, I've got a very good start I think. I just checked out your site, that thing is looking GREAT!! Keep us posted...

Sounds like a great package. I have been looking for a K30 myself to do a body swap with my 85 C20 which has a mint body. The K30 is the only way to go on those later years....dana 60 front, np205, etc etc. Good luck on your project!

I looked at that link and I think it is incorrect about the K30 switching to a semi-floating. It will be easy for you to verify once you get to look at the rear axle again. Here is a link with additional information about what GM offered http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/bible/index.html#GMRE

WOw! I hope you're right. I am somewhat familiar with pirate4x4 through a Jeep club I was once in. Lots of good information there. I am going up Saturday to pay for the truck, and get a bill of sale. Now I am really anxious to get up there.... Thanks again!

Yep, just needed minor rust repairs luckily. A buddy replaced both rocker panels and a section of the floor and kick panel area on the passenger side and a small repair on the drivers side floor. That was about all the rust that there was that needed attention. It appeared to have had a second paint job at some point. I sanded down to primer and the body guy ended up taking it down further. He fixed a bullet hole in the roof and found some rust on the rear passenger side cab corner that he fixed. The driver door had a little rust and I just replaced that door. Body guy smoothed it out pretty good and took care of the paint. Getting so close to being able to fire the 454 for the first time - just having a heck of a time getting any free time lately to work on it - grrr! Thanks for the compliments - means alot to me.

I'm with Yukon......Most likely (if it's the original rear axle) it will be the FF axle. Those early and mid eighties K30 were awesome, with a lot of the good parts. The Dana 60 fronts are selling for some big bucks (check out the Pirate and Colorado K5 boards for proof!!) Have fun!!! Misled |

hi guys! went up to vermont today, paid for my one ton parts truck. here's some pictures. Good news!! It's a full floater. You were right Jack. Thanks for your help. This truck also has the hyrdroboost brake system, which is a nice little bonus. I got some really good parts wicked cheap with this truck! Pretty soon I will be able to get to work on this thing. Just need an engine, and I will have all of the raw parts I need. I should have the following:
14 bolt full floater rear axle (10 1/2 inch ring gear) dana 60 front axle TH400 tranny NP205 cast iron transfer case Does anybody know if I can bolt up a 350 where the 454 used to be in this truck, just to plow for now? Thanks alot! |
