Intake manifold
replacing the intake gaskets and saw this... maybe someone can shed some light as to what the build up is?

Exhaust gas cross over passage. Carbon build up from oil burning.

I never knew what that was for... Almost every (tired) engine I have broken down was 75% or more clogged. On the P.O.S. in my garage right now, I had to stab at it with a large screwdriver!

any tips on how to reduce the carbon build up without doing a ring job?
