'91 1Ton and diesel ?....

Looking at a '91 Crewcab diesel 2wd (dually) for a pretty good price locally. Am told it was a navy base truck and as such its never even been licensed. It has 65,000 original miles but is about as basic as can be. No A/C, cruise, carpet, etc. It does have a fith-wheel hitch in the bed.
I noticed that it had an overdrive dash indicator and was curious as I didn't think the 1Tons came with OD until a few years later. When I looked underneath the truck, the tranny pan looked like it was 1-1/2 feet long by about 1 foot wide? Is it possible that this is a newer style tranny like a 480LE or something like that?
Also, in another thread I saw that in the governmet (military) diesels they spec'ed them with higher fuel flow or something like that so they performed a lot better? Would something like this qualify?
As a 1Ton dually wouldn't this truck be geared pretty high (or low, or whatever?), like in the 3.93-4.11 range?
BTW, this is the "old" body style like 81-87.
Any comments are appreciated.

In 91, they did put the 4L80E in some one ton duallys. That would be an awesome setup to get a hold of. It has a separate transmission controller because that 6.2 is not controlled by an ECM.

That would be a J code (heavy duty) 6.2 not only because it is military, but because it is in a 1 ton. Note that the J codes 6.2s still aren't power houses.

If you'd don't end up buying this truck, I'd love to get in line and I'm local too.

Interesting....I've never heard of an overdrive behind a diesel in the old body style 1 ton trucks....I don't think the 4L80E came out until 92.....

If you take another look at it, try and find out some more info on it...you might look at the glove box and see if it lists tranny options.

I can't remember my source, so I can't point to it. They put the 4L80E trannies in starting in 91 (454 SS is one place you can find them...) and they put the 4L60E's in starting in 93. Just like GM normally does, they made a changes to the last year of the production model before they got rid of them...

kevinr1970 - Is that truck at Detroit Auto Works? They told me they wanted 8995. That seems like a lot for a 2wd even with only 68k miles.

In the glove box all the codes are just that, codes. They don't spell out what the code stands for after them.

Yes it is the one at DAW. I was talking to the salesman and he was pretty flimsy on the price. Seems like I talked him down a few grand before I even started it up. If you aren't familiar with the dealer (I use the term loosely...), they came into existance in the muscle car craze late 80's-early 90's - DAW, Muscle Car Heaven (more like hell). I think every one who worked there (including the owner) went to jail at one time or another if not for ripping people off, then for something to do with a white powdery substance. Don't ask how I know this.....
