I bought a chrome 1 wire alt for 100.00 on ebay and you should be able to get the dist for 150.00 or less! check all your grounds that is the root of most factory wiring problems!!!!!!!!!

Painless wiring harness, one wire alternator, HEI distributor. If any money left over, spend on beer and pizza to "help" the installation.

Well I get a OEM looking engne harness from Classic Heart Beat. That has the Internal Alt and HEI hook up's. Then I would get 140amp Powermaster Alt. and find a beefed up HEI.
New plug wires and holders. A Red Top Optima, And maybe some Billet Pulleys and Alt brackets.....

You stole the words out of my mouth, that's exactly what I'd do. I've installed three Painless wiring kits so far, zero problems.

it sounds like the OP and I were in the same boat. I had all of the above mentioned problems and after looking at the rats nest of wiring i decided it was best to rewire my truck so i ordered a painless harness but they were out of stock so i had to wait two weeks. In that two weeks i discovered that my dis was shot so i bought the mds super pack since the po had several different size wires and the coil looked pretty bad too.

The problem was that for every problem i fixed i discovered several more that were hidden and now my truck is just a rolling frame. My $800 turned into about $3g's and counting so unfortunately im not the right person to offer advice except that BEFORE your spend $1 make sure you are aware of ALL of the problems with your truck.
