? for all you CCC guys...

this may be slightly off hte topic, but i just bought a 81 caprice with a 305 and 61 original K on it. the car ran barely, puffed back through the carb and had all the signs of a rounded cam lobe... sure enough i swapped the cam out and it did have a rounded #8 ehaust lobe... so it put everything back together, and engine cranks but wont start... I have spark, fuel and air... so that leads me to timing.. i installedthe distibutor straight up TDC, #1 on compression stroke (set when i did dry valve lash set up), but still slow hard cranking.. so i reinstalled the dist thinking i could MAYBE have forgotten to turn the engine back over to TDC after vlave lash.. still same cranking, a sputter through the carb occasionally, and no start... I DID however notice that i had one plug that had no home as I disassembled and reassembled, and that was the four pronged plug for and electronic disributor.. EVERYTHING else is factory, cept for a vac advance older style dist on the motor... will this thing run with the old style distributor in it??? it did run enough to limp around my driveway before i tore down... cuz i am at my wits end (oh i tried a working HEI out of a running 76 chevy truck and same thing, crank but no start)... any suggestions??? i am quitting for tonight hoopefully tomorrow will be better... thanks for hte help...

Maybe it would help to read through this and make sure you did not skip a step...

It should be able to run with an old points style distributor, if that is what you are asking.

does the engine respond to pumping the gas?. do a compression check. i installed a cam once and it would not crank. it turned out that it had no compression and the valves werent seating. i adjusted the valves wrong and flattend 3 lobes of a brand new cam.

Just in case you might not have known, the smallblocks in the 80's had timing marks that point away from each other instead of at each other like the old ones.

huh??? that is something i sure didnt know.... but the cam instructions agreed witht he 81 chiltons i was using... i dont have an 81 CSM yet... i am in theprocess of pulling a CCC distributor out of an 83 caprice, but it got dark on me last night and the thing is being a bit stubborn to come out... I have the day off today to go get some dental work done (id rather be teaching) so im gonna stop by this mornign and try to pop it out again... but thot hose of you concerned, I initially installed the distributor staight up on TDC #1 compression and then i also tried going 180 also cuz i can be an ididot at times.. same cranking sounds and all... just slow cranking like its under load and no fire... ill prolly do more investigating tomorrow nite, cuz tonight im sure i wont feel like it... ill keep you posted.. thanks for all the help, keep the responses comin!!!!!!....

well i have an update.. I was able to find a CCC distributor off an 85 chevy blazer... It has the 4 terminal CCC connection and a vac advance module, different but from all indications should be right for htis particular 81 caprice... anyway, i thought i had a little spark b4 (it was never that great), but now I have no spark at all, even directly from the terminal directly beneath the coil... I do have 11.91VDC at the bat wire connection, and 9.8VDC cranking at the xame point... I have tried 3 other distributors, theis new one and two other operational from other vehicles, and no success... Is there something I am missing here??? ballast resistor... somehting???? I do not as of yet have a 81 chevy CSM, so i dont have wirng diagrams... but if i have 11.91VDC at the cap i should get something out of it... I am about to take it in, cuz i am driving my 70 K10 right now and 8 mpg with 80 miles a day commute gets expensive... any other sugggestions????
