Progress!

I was supposed to get this stuff a few months ago, but my wife and I have been involved in purchasing some land to build a house. Now that we've got that over with, I can use some of my money for "my" toys!

I finally ordered my bags, valves and air tank Tuesday from *****************. The UPS man dropped it off tonight (Thursday). Installation begins Monday since I have the week off for Thanksgiving.

Now that I have the valves "in hand" I can take the blueprints I've been working on to the machinist and have my valve manifold started. It'll kinda be like this but with 1/2" NPT connections and will mount my GC Extreme 1/2" valves. Should be pretty neato!

I can also finalize the template showing where to drill the mounting holes in the frame for the rear bags. I've had a couple people express interest in those. Sorry to ramble, I'm just excited to be DOING something!

Here's a couple pix...front A-arms and spindles mocked up to check fit, and a rear bag in place.

why the two valves per wheel? Only needs one to inflate/deflate per wheel right? I am still gaining knowledge on the air ride!

This might clear things up for the 2 valves per wheel question. (This is for a 2-tank, 2-compressor, 4-way system)

the GC and most other diaphram valves are "one way" they are designed to only have air flow through them one way... so you will need a fill and a dump, you can make a very nice manafold with parts procured from home depot as well.. i have put 15000 miles on my system with little to no problems

Do they make two way valves? If not them someone should. Im sure a two way valve could be engineered and produced at a better price than two one way valves and it would simplify and clean up the system. Of course ..... i dont know anything about valves.

Yes, they do make 3-position valves which is what I'm using on my truck. Here's how you'd plumb that type of system.......

Has anybody seen a 3-position manual valve? Doesn't need to be air suspension designed, just a normal valve will do.

Slammed67,

Got two questions on that first diagram you posted. First, is the coalescing filter also known as a watertrap? Second, what would the use of the optional toggle switch on the pressure switch be used for?

thanks

What you guys are missing with the valve situation is we are working with air pressure. Since the air tanks are normally holding more pressure than the bag the air flows from the tank to the bag. Not because the valve is a one way valve, but because the pressure is greater on the tank side.

To understand this think of it this way. If your bags were filled to 80 pounds and your air tank was at 30 pounds the air would flow from the bag to the tank.....

Yes the filter they have pictured is there to trap moisture coming out of the compressor.

I am assuming the "optional" switch would be a safety feature to prevent the compressor from coming on in the event of a pressure switch failure....

They do make 3 ways but they are more expensive about 150 per valve compared to 70 bucks for (2) 1/2 inch extremes

That and it just allows you to shut off the compressor(s) if for some reason you don't want it running.

I was thinkin of a valve that used two separate lines. One on, both off, then the other on. We have one at work on the pallet machine that's used for some little air cylinders, but it's got dinky ports. I think this valve would work perfect for an easy simple, reliable suspension set-up.

3 way (or 3 position) valves, otherwise known as "spool" valves are known to stick...not saying they don't work, but just about everybody that I've known that has used them at one time or another has switch over to a "pilot" type valve (2 postion~open & closed)

Are the ones that stick electronic or manual?

So these are 73-87 style a-arms and spindle with what year rotors and calipers? Was it a direct bolt on or didyou have to modify or fab something?Did you need the 73-87 crossmember?

Re: Progress!

Holy crap this thread is old!

oscareltemblo-
I swapped all of the front suspension from a '76 truck. The only thing that didn't get swapped is the crossmember, it's the original '68. The spindles are 3" DJM's for 73-87 trucks.
