Interesting pop coming from HEI - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

87 350 w/hei and holley 600cfm

When i rev my engine and then let it back off I hear a solid 'pop' coming from the hei distributor. Truck is running great (other than flooding on me every now and then).

Also a quick question about timing, if I'm standing on the driver side of the truck pointing the timing light down at the harmonic balancer, where should the lines be.... marking on balancer should be before, even, or after pointer marking...?

I have no idea about the pop but with the mark bafore would be btdc and after would be atdc on the mark would be a big 0

btw: bad a$$ truck super duck! I had a 69 swb step in high school just about that color. Just added yours to the list of colors to decide from on repainting this one.

The noise sounds to me like worn bushings on the shaft of the HEI. When you let off the throttle, the dist wants to climb the gear, and it is letting it do so. Then ot hits the seal and stops it, causinf a popping noise.

This is speculation, I have never had one do this, nor have I had one with worn bushings. Just seems to make sence to me.

hmmm, never tore into one - are they rebuildable or does it mean buying new? If in that's what it happens to be.

Check that the cap is seated and latched down. It is possible that the rotor is hitting the cap.
