Question 68 info required please?

Does any one have a link that proves 68s came with just reflectors and not wired marker lights? I read this somewhere and for an inspection sticker the guy thinks that a 68 is to have working side marker lights. Even on this boards link page it claims 68s had lights, the link on info on buying 67-72 trucks. Thanks for any help.

My 68 just passed a state patrol inspection last month and it does have reflectors not lights. From what I know and can tell It came that way from the factory. But I do know that in 67 the mustang had lights on all four corners and in 68 it had lights up front and reflectors in back. Hope that helps

My 68 also had reflectors, I had to wire in the lights myself.

You sure about that? My 67 cougar had no markers at all, and they were not required. I have never seen a 67 anything with factory lights or reflectors.

In 68, the reflectors were standard, lights optional. The only way the lights are required is if the truck was a cab/chassis model. It was then required to have the clearance lights on top, and the side markers.

Look in the FAQ section, I have a thread about how to get a restoration catalog straight from GM that will give you this info...if that isn't enough proof for the inspection station, then (asuming your reflectors are original) remove the reflactor, and point out to them that there is NO HOLE for a light. You can see where it was supposed to go, but there will not be a hole there.

1969 is the same way.
1970 and up had all 4 marker lights standard.

Do me a favor if you would....look in the trunk and check out the wires, also look on the lens for the date. All OEM lenses are required to have a date cast into them, normally the first year of a tail light style is what they will all say untill the body style chainges. (example, a 72 truck's tail light may well have 67 stamped into it)
If you could get a pic or two that would be awsome too.

I'm not trying to say you are wrong... just want to see if your stang has original markers. It is odd that it would since it was not required by the feds untill 68.

My dad had done some heinous mods to the poor car, you can see it in my photobucket link under my 67 I'm gonna work on it this weekend and I will research it. Thanks for the info now you got me curious if this is another crazy mod that was done to it. It's proof to me that me dad did do drugs.

If it is listed in the glove box, then yes.
It is real easy to tap into the stock lightless harness and make it all look original.

My '68 Panel has lights, but it's obvious that the wiring was added by some PO. The '68 'Burb I've parted had reflectors. No holes or wires for lights, just straight reflectors.

I trust Andy is correct here, and I'm assuming this applies to trucks only.

I'm quite sure that for cars, no side lights or reflectors were required through the 1967 model year. Beginning with 1968 models, 4 marker lights were required. At least that's how it was on the Camaros (& Firebirds) of that era, and I believe it also applied to all passenger vehicles.

I am not sure how the law was worded aback then, i do know that the fords of 68 had lights up front, and reflectors in back, but you are right that most cars had lights all around.

Thanks to all, I ended up with no written proof so I just wired them up. I have my inspection sticker all legal now. Now to find some ricers to run over in the lifted beast!
LOL
