How close does you engine fit?

I just got the 350 goodwrench into my 72 4x4 and was wondering if all of them are that close to the firewall?I mean i have to loosen the dist and turn it just to get the cap on.I dont have a pic right now but are they all that close?I think i got about 8 inches from the fan to the 4 core....lol

on my 85 its not that close, although it is fairly close with an HEI and in-cap coil.

Do the 67-72 chevy trucks have a I6 position that is further back and the v8 position?

On 4X4's the V8's are in the six cylinder position. No one is exactly sure why GM did that but many have guessed that it is either to get the front drive shaft longer (less angle) or to get the weight back further. HEI ignitions will fit, barely. I had to cut the bolt that comes through the firewall which holds up the heater from the inside to get mine to fit. You should have an inch or two of clearance if you are running a non HEI unit.

I have HEI on my 4x4, and there is no way I can get my finger between the dizzie and the firewall. It is very close.

The HEI that I put in my 70 "almost" touches, I dont think that I could put a 22g wire between the plug wire and the firewall.

Just a thought:
I was just thinking that if the rubber in the tranny mount compressed with age, an 1/8" drop at the tranny mount would give you about the same at the dizzy. It might be normal for them to be close but couldn't the tranny mount be raised slightly (shimmed at the frame) to tilt the motor up, which would give the dizzy more clearance?

No tranny mount on a 4x4. Good idea though. It would be a lot of trouble to shim the transfer case, if it's not causing problems being close, I wouldn't mess with it.

Yea the adapter cross member and the transfer case bracket would have to be "adjusted".

My 68 does rub, just enough to rub the paint off of the firewall with the back 2 plug wire boots(HEI) I have heard of guys taking a hammer to the firewall or even a sawsall!

you can put my 71 down as a rubber. Ive thought about going with a reg dstbtr & external coil. Maybe a new poly transfercase mount will be the ticket. I mean you only need a 1/2 inch or so. I'll bet my orig rubber mount is saggy.

The poly mounts will raise the TC up some. Just depends how bad you are worn out.

Yall keep talking about the inline 6 location, & my 71 only has one set of holes. It has a 350. my plug boots just barely rub. I'm gonna replace the tran mount & see.

NOT ME. *********
I picked up my current truck in the summer its a 72 3/4 ton camper special, and I have 2 inches to the fire wall with the HEI. It is the only 4x4 i have seen like that. I have 3 friends with 67-72 4x4s and all theres either rub or are close. I am either lucky or somthing is F*&%ed up. Its a great truck.

yeah i know what you mean, i tried to use the edelbrock elite tall valve covers and they rubbed on firewall and was no way they were going on, clearance is a joke when theres so much room under the hood.

You all have me curious???? Can you remove the HEI when it is that close to the firewall???? I pulled one ouyt of a 76 truck and it had to be tipped forward just so to remove, and it seemed to have plenty of clearance behind it.

Question A Solution??

Here's what I'm going to do:
Putting in a 700R4 mated up to my NP205 TC. I'm going to leave the TC crossmember and frame mount in the stock location and work everything forward from there. Meaning the 'adapter' that I will have to use to mate the 700R4 to the NP205 will bring the engine forward and so will the additional length of the tranny itself. I'll end up having to drill new holes in the frame (8) for the engine crossmember only. This will definitely bring the engine away from the firewall by about 3.5 inches I'm told.

Since theres no body on the rolling chassis right now, I figure its the easiest way and best time to do this.

What do you guys think?

I am very interested to see if everything works out for you. I too have a '72 k20, and am hoping to go with the np205 along with a 700R4 and maybe a fuel injected 350. What are you using for an engine? Be sure to keep us posted on any progress......John

Thumbs up

John,
I'm going to use my HT383 stroked small block. I'll probably get rid of the belt driven fan and go with an electric unit from Old Air Products.

I'll keep you guys posted with pics off the build-up.

I am doing the 700r4 swap too. I am using the TH350 adapter, and the tranny is only about 1 3/4" longer. I may just swap in a 2wd fan shroud and run the engine driven fan.

Never thought about the option of moving the cab back a little. Interesting.

Question

71swb4x4,
are you using an additional adapter between the trans. and the TH350 adapter?? If yes, which one? If no, what did you have to do to your 700R4 to make it mate up to a TH350 adapter??

My estimates on how far forward the engine will move are based on using the TH350 TC and this 'block' adapter that I saw on this Board that allows the 700R4 to mate to the TH350 adapter??

Thanks for your response to this,
72longbed
