tilt column discoveries and ???'s
Well i went to put a tilt coulmn and cruise in my 74 C10 (easier to do while engine is out) and noticed that my tilt coulmn with cruise does not have a splined end that mates to the shaft to steering box... I have a tilt w/o cruise out of a 77 silverado and that has the correct splined joint... whats the deal??? did the cars get one type of joint and the trucks got another??? or can i swap some pieces and make it work.. cuz i would like to use the tilt w/cruise since i have a complete set up from a 76 parts truck.... any idears... thanks,

when I was looking for the short shaft for my tilt swap, I noticed there are a couple differnt combinations. Some trucks had a splined shaft that matched my column, others had a larger diameter shaft. Not sure what you got, but I'd bet if you go to a yard with enough vehichles you'll find the one your looking for. seems some cars & trucks are interhcangable but the year makes a differnce. Good luck.

If you are willing to, you can swap shafts between tilt columns to get the correct one, you cannot swap shafts between tilt and non-tilt columns though. Other option is to grab the part that comes out of the steering box and attaches to the column, and just swap those ones.

well I have an update on this one... after lloking at both my cruise and non cruise column, it looks as though I can just place my cruise lever in my non cruise column (with the splined shaft) and feed the wire down through the column.. so that problem solved... BUT only after getting everything else hooked up did i notice that my 74 harmonica harness clip is slightly different than the 77 column i put in... the wires are all the same colors and in the same order from one male connector to the other, but the 77 will not plug into the harness connector of 74.. SOOOOOO ive been working on taking a jewlers screwdriver and popping each wire out and swapping it to the other connector... Il have more of an update tomorrow since the lady in my life needed me back inside the house to help her with some things ... so project halted till tomorrow nite... BUT the main point is that if you want to put a 77 or newer column in your 76 or earlier the connector is different and you may want to find hte right year tilt... man i must be tired, that was a lot of rambling ... till tomorrow...
