Military K30 Questions

Anyone know if all the 1985 era military K30s had the NP208 transfer case?

Also will a 350 gas bolt up to a Turbo 400 that was behind the original diesel or is it a different bolt pattern?

Dean, not all of the CUCV's had the NP208, but a vast majority of them did. There were a few that used the NP205, but they are hard to come by.

M1008s used a 6.2/400/208 combo feeding a Dana 60 front, and a Corp 14FF outback with 4.56s gears and a Detroit out back. there are VERY few 465 trucks, but they still retained the 208.

I think you got it switched around...there were NO 465 trucks, and very few trucks with the 205.

no, i have seen M1008s at the local armory with 465s in them. the M1010 i do believe did have a 205, but that is not the vehicle in question.

I'm not sure as to which T-Case was in those trucks, but I do know that that engine swap you're talking about can be done, the one thing you will need is a gas engine torque converter (The diesel ones are different, I ran into this with an '82 K5). I stuck a 400 I had in a wrecked truck, and I'd recommend the swap. The big trouble I had with the 6.2 is, well, it's kind of a turd, especially where I live at 7200 feet. The only real performance mod is to slap on an aftermarket turbo (I.E Banks). The other mod I've seen done was swapping in a 6.5 Nonturbo diesel (I was told the blocks are the same), and then sticking the turbo on. I'd go with SB power though, to be cost effective. The other BIG thing you've got to watch on CUCVs is they came with a weird (But military standard) 24 Volt electrical system, which makes finding things like starters and alternators a pain, not to mention you can't just bolt on lights or any old winch. Good luck.

I have never heard of a 4 speed m1008 or any of the m10-- line having a 4 speed but there is a pickup body just like the 1008 that came with a 205, they were designated as m1028 shelter carriers. the m1028A1 had the PTO option, my assumptionis that is why they used the 205 . ive even heard rumors that a few out there had 350's in them but i have never witnessed this. as far as electrical i think only the starters are 24 volt everything else is a standard 12 volt. they just wire the starter to the bateries in series aiding to power the 24 volt starter.

Thanks for the information guys! I don't think the military version is what I want for a body swap. I don't want the NP208 and the 6.2 diesel would be of no use to me.

While we are on the topic...

I have a 84 Chevy M1010 (ambulance) that has the front leaf springs bowing down on the ends... Is that normal or have they become set?

Normal. All stock GM front 4X4 leaf springs have negative arch.

Angry

My truck, '84 Chevy M1010 (ambulance), has no brake lights. Both are out, the blinkers and running lights work. I looked at all the fuses under the dashboard thinking one might be blown. I have no wiring schematic or fuse block diagram. Anyone have a clue where the problem might be?

the switch on the column might be bad. or it could be in the wiring.

Actually, the 6.2 is a very torquey, reliable, and economical engine. Also, there`s alot to do without a turbo to get more power from them.Ask Dr.Lee,aka The Clevite Kid,on TheDieselPage.com.As far as CUCV electrical systems go,the only thing 24v is the starting/charging system. It`s simple to convert to civvy 12v using standard parts.Jim Allen,GM 4WD Guru has an awesome 6.2 diesel Blazer. He`s written books, and for major mags(like 4Wheel&Offroad).Now has a column in 4WheelParts`OffRoadAdventures,knows his stuff, likes this engine. They`re great motors off-road,on the highway, and`round town.Unless you`re into light to light racing. Then,I`d use something besides a HD 4wd.My $.02.

Is it worth the trouble of finding a M1008 to have the heavyduty axles? I am just curious. If I do find one I would definitely do the gas motor swap.

I Ohm ed out the brake switch and think its working. With the plunger out: closed and with it depressed: open... I checked the voltage at the plug and found none. I have the dashboard partially disassembled to follow the wiring back to the problem. I could use a diagram of the fuse block... Any suggestions?
