Help Please, My Burb is protesting...
I just dont think she appreciated having to get up and go to work today. I admit shes been runnin a little rough lately, and the weather has been getting colder. I know shes due for new plugs etc. But, This morning she started hard, and as I was driving, outta no where, she died, I pumped the gas and she came back to life, died again this time I put er in N and restarted , she started strong, no struggling. I was a little low on fuel, but not sucking fumes. I got her to the Chevron, put about 1/2 tank in her and she ran fine all the way to work, (14 mi). AFTER work, I let er idle and warm up, shes still runnin a little rough, but runnin. I start home, get about half way, she dies, (no warning, no sputtering or anything, just ....off) Then just as I throw her in N to restart, she starts up on her own and BACKFIRES, 3 times. Prolly scared everyone with in a country mile chitless, myself included.
Fuel filter?? Plugs?? Could the starting hard in the mornings be the carb?? or choke?? Im pretty sure I need a new choke spring, had a guy order one for me but it was the wrong one, (mine was under the one he ordered was over or vice versa) Where can I get a NEW correct spring?? What could the problem be?? Shes NEVER back fired before. Thanks for the help. junk

Ever replaced the timing chain? Could be a fuel filter or pump getting ready to go. sounds like fuel mixture is lean or timing is off.

Chain was replaced about 4 years ago, guess she could be outta timing, not sure how the fuel would be "lean".

Jodie, didn't they replace the engine 2 years ago?
Do you have points or HEI distributor? |

Do you have a points type distributor or have you converted to HEI? What you describe sounds like a points distributor problem when the gap closes up from wear.
I would suspect the ignition more than fuel since it backfires when running down the road. If you have HEI a module or pickup coil can cause similar problems. Jim |

Andrew, engine was replaced less than 2 years ago, I have HEI. Now would be a good time to come over for dinner

Fuel Filter?
Jodie,
If you like most people tend to run the vehicle low on gas, IE below a quarter of a tank, alot of the time you might have picked up some trash in the fuel filter. I had that happen with a F*rd I used to own. Had to drain all the fuel out of the tank, clean it out, and change the fuel filter. Never had a problem again. Or you might have just got some bad gas. Something else I forgot to mention. A couple times in the last 2 weeks or so, my truck would "diesel" when I went to shut it off. Im going to pull the filter and check it in the morning.

this happened to me recently in my burb. when i did get it to start the exhaust was very black. i popped open the carb(stock quadrajet) and blew it all out. i didnt see anything that looked bad. i put it back together and tossed in a new filter and its ran fine ever since.

OK... something else just came to mind. When my truck is cold, when I start er up, she dont idle down easily, even after shes warmed up, also the brakes feel "robbed", not like needs pads, but just ,,,,hmmmm. Not quite all there... is this making any sense .. (Atleaste I havent had to use the word, "thingie" yet)
Kerry, thank you, gonna check that filter just for "funsies" CG, mine also has a Qjet, havent noticed black or dark smoke tho. Andrew, oddly enough, your reasoning make sense, lol. Will still check it tho. Gonna change the plugs Sunday, wires should be fine, unless theres something obvious, like a burnt one or something. Will try to check these before work in the morning. Dinner?? You name it darlin.... Breakfast??? Whats breakfast?? Must be that fruit and yogurt that I cram down my throat on my 10 min break...

Trash in the tank
All I can tell you is what I have observed. I had trash in my fuel line that caused the vehicle not to run. After I flushed the tank and installed a new fuel filter it ran ok. Kerry

I am confused, which isn't unusual, but still...
The timing chain was replaced 4 years ago but the engine was swapped out 2 years ago. So ummm, the engine that is in the burb now has a 4 year old timing chain in it? Anyway, sounds like a timing/firing issue, at least for the backfiring. Trash in the carb may make one spit, sputter and die but I don't see trash making one backfire. Noone been tinkerin under the hood have they? Years ago at work this guy goes out after work, gets in his 72 C10 and it's running like crap, spittin, backfiring. Was running fine that morning. Turns out some d***head decided it would be funny to swap a couple of plug wires around. |

Tugowar... "YOURE" confused?? ... "IM" confused. When the engine is changed, would the timming chain be an automatic change?? If so, then it was changed about 2 years ago.
I dont "think" anyone has messed with my truck, but, I will check that too. Thanks for your input

If theres anything "weird" odd" or "never happens" its gonna happen with my poor Burb

I would probably say it's either a vacuum leak of some sort or a timing issue. Isn't it frustrating to not be able to have everyone show up with beer and fix the dern thing

by chance it could be a distributor module on it s way out.Ive seen them do some weird things.. timing shouldnt change unless you change it, and the chain shouldntbe stretched too bad in 2 years.try the basics fule filter, air filter, plugs

I'll try one also
Sounds to me like the power piston in the carb is hanging up. Dumps to much fuel and floods out also with the extra fuel it won't idle well also with the extra fuel in the mainfold and cylinders she will diesel and maybe even backfire. Just my guess.

OK, no vacuum leak evident, wires look to be in good condition on the outside, wires where they should be, fuel filter clean and free of debris. On start up, butterfly is not closing, stays wide open, would this be the "choke spring"?? and what kinds of other problems could this cause?? My biggest problem with using the suggestions that yall offer is, I dont know what things are, or how to check them. Makes me feel STUPID because the answer has GOTTA be right in front of me, and I dont know how to figure it out Off tomorrow, hopefully can figure something out, for today, she gets to rest, my sister is taking me to work.

Your automatic choke is not working correctly, its either not correctly set or inop. When engine is cold(sat overnight), a tap of the accelerator should close the choke blade. After startup, choke plate should crack open a small amount to allow engine to run, then the blade continues to open slowly as the engine warms up. Start with a new spring & then set the choke after engine has been sitting overnight. A manual may help w/setting procedure, if I was closer I would come do it. Brian

Could get your timing checked. If it's off it can cause it to diesel and run poorly. After I got my timing fixed my dieseling problem with my 454 stopped. I still gotta get my carb tuned and choke fixed though. Good luck.
