A good book/reference ?
Stupid newbie question here...
What do you guys recomend in the way of a shop manual for our trucks ? Is there one definitive work or several must haves ? My current issuses on the new (to me not new to the world obviously) all center around wiring kludges by the dread previous owner, and a VERY slow wiper motor. Eventually however I'll touch every part and system on this thing. Thanks, Brian

I'm a big believer in tech data. I have the chevy factory service manual, factory assembly manual, haynes and clymer manuals. I use them all. It's a big help to have more than one perspective on how to do a task. I would like a new clymer manual though... I left it on the floor and a pet pig I had peed on it. Still has a distinctive aroma to it.

These are the manuals that I would recommend: Assembly Manual, Service Manual, and Overhaul Manual.
Here is one source, but there are other places that carry the manuals. Jim http://www.gregsonline.com/ |

Librarian's 2 cents worth
There is potentially every book ever written on our trucks available to us through a system called "interlibrary loan." Here?s how it works:
1. Go to your local public library and see if they have the title you're looking for. Here in Phoenix for example, the central library has most of the shop manuals, Chilton's, and Haynes for 67-72 Chevy pickups. Many are in a reference collection so you need to photocopy the sections you need. Others just check out. 2. If your library doesn't have a copy (or lost it or part of it because some low life scum stole it or razored it up) you can request from your library's interlibrary loan office (most public, community college, etc. libraries have one) to borrow a book or photcopies of a portion of the book. 3. You have to request an exact title and be willing to pay for copying, shipping and/or handling (usually low cost, sometimes free) If you can give 'em an ISBN #, so much the better. 4. On average, it takes about 2 weeks to get something but if you're in a hurry some places will fax of FedEx for added cost. Remember go to your local library and make the request. The library that has what you want in the next state won't work with individuals outside of their service area- just library to library on your behalf. Wondering how many titles are out here? If you can access a database called WorldCat (many public libraries have it for you) and search for keywords" Chevrolet pickups" it shows that there are 49 books, 5 magazines, and one Internet database dedicated to the topic. "Chevy trucks" yields over 100 items! There?s gold in them thar hills folks!

I call my 64-71 car book the Bible. it has helped me rebuild th350s, my munci 4 speed, alternators and counless other things that you will be hard pressed to find out how to fix

Does anyone know where to get a Chilton hardcover for 67-72 Chevy pickups? I haven't been able to find an original or even a reproduction for just those years.

Seems like Chilton only did tune-up & repair on these. That's all the libraries picked up anyhow. The last word in manuals, as far as stock goes, would be "Chevrolet truck chassis service manual, series 10 through 60. or "C/K truck service manual" and the other GM publications published in series for whatever year you're working on . Reproductions of many of these are still being sold and many libraries carry them. There are some execellent performance and parts interchange titles out there too.

I have been buying original manuals on CD Rom from Gearhead Cafe. The original manuals are becoming collector items..The CD Rom manuals are great. You can print the pages you need for the task at hand, get them as greasy as you want then just toss them. They have a great selection.

Many years ago (20 to be exact in my previous '69 truck life) I had a Chilton 67-72 C/K Jimmy hardcover that was a very good book but don't even see one on the used list nowadays. Shame I donated it a few years back......

In my opinion; the shop manuals by Chev or GMC are the only way to go for the most complete information... Haven't looked at the newer Haynes, Motor or Chilton manuals lately, all too often the decriptions, overhaul procedures....Example.. On an exploded view of a 4 barrell carburetor and other items; the "note, may not be the same on all models" or a picture of a 'Typical ' install that looks nothing like your/year model of vehicle....... Grrrrrrrr....... Jim (lol)

I really like the old Clymer I have. It list a lot of info like fuel pump pressures and plugs/plug gaps for everything from70-77. Has a lot of rebuild stuff too. Alternators and starters. That info is gettin rare in these "just replace it" times.

My Haynes truck manual is an older version (1990, I believe), & it has much more in the way of wiring diagrams than the current versions of the "same" book.
