what plug wires to use with headers??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I kinda stole the idea from the another post on the board relating to HEI and ram horns... but what kind of plug wires should i run with my new small block with summit headiers in my 74 2wd c10... I would like to run an 8mm ACDelco (i have a set i ordered for a 76 silverado since i have HEI) but I can return them on a set (76 vette maybe???) that may fit the headers better??? any suggestions or expereinces???

I have cheapy flowtech headers. Made up my own wires from accel. I used a rail-type loom that bolts to the lower edge of the valve covers. Then found some heat resistant cloth? boot covers to slip over the plug ends. Looks good. Works good.

Here's a before pic that kinda shows the routing. I'm on the wrong computer for an after pic.

I made my own wires and I will never buy another pre-fit set again. They are so easy to make yourself, and they will fit exactly how you want them to.

I used a set of 8.8 300+ Accel wires, they have adjustable boots so you change the angle at the plug. Very helpfull to keep the wires off the headers. I am also running the boots on the wires after 2 wires hit the headers with old looms. I also run accel shorty plugs, the help a little with plug installation.

thanks shawn and the rest... what kind of wires (brand) and I have never made my own, do i need a special tool??? Id like to keep and use delco wires, just cuz im anal.. but i may be cooerced into a better black wire.. Ive thought about Jacobs and Taylor, but i dont knwo too much about them... respond away!!!...

I do have an aluminum block that is used along with a safety razor to strip the wires. It also crimps the terminals. It was like 5 bucks at our local speed shop. You can do it all freehand but you must be carefull not to nick the conductor.

msd has black wires, they also have the tool in the box, so no need to buy one

try aurora plug wires.
They are the best made , but exspensive.

The accel wires are black and come with crimper in the box (it goes in a vise)

I used the accel cut to fit on my vette and they worked great. I also fought the little boots that go over the end of the plug wires and they work well also. I think jegs sells both ... or at least they use to.

That's their top of the line ones. The cheaper yellow ones do not come with a crimper.

Todd and I split a role of wire from Sturdevants. We bought a 100 foot role of 8mm, it was nearly $1/foot. I think I used around 20 feet to do my truck. All we used was the razor mentioned earlier and the crimping tool. Nothing too fancy. A little dielectric grease on the terminal helps slip the boots over and keeps everything corrosion free for a long time.
