The starter I have now bolts into the bell housing and is giving me a problem turning slow when the engine is hot, even after putting a heat shield around it. Can I swap this starter with the newer style that bolts up into the block. It had a 307 engine in it but has a 350 now. One other question. Is brace on the back of the starter necessary? It doesnt have one.

get a new starter from auto zone with a lifetime warranty when it starts turning slow return it for a new one. Over and over again

Alot of starter problems are bad wires leading to starter. I always upgrade the main wire from battery to zero gauge wire. The wires get heat soaked sooo many times over the years and they wear out. Not to say your starter isn't shot too...

Most towns have an alternator/starter rebuild shop that can take your starter and make it like new again.

The warranty probably won't be lifetime, but sometimes that only means you get to spend a lifetime replacing the import rebuilds anyway.

The upside to the rebuild is that it almost always goes back where you took it from without shimming or alignment problems. That, plus the issue mentioned elsewhere about supporting local business.

BTW, there's no guarantee that a later mounting setup will crank any better than your bellhousing-mount. The bellhousing-mount starter on ours had the HD solenoid and still works great. I'll repeat the suggestion to verify your wires and connections first.

I have a bell mount starter and it works no problem,it will sit in the same place even with a block mount so the teeth will engage properly,where it mounts doesn't really matter too much,IMO.

Thanks. I'd rather keep the starter style I have now because I don't have to worry about shimming it to get it to work right. I will just replace or rebuild it.
