ive recently had a problem with starts. for the past few days my truck was going threw a problem of starting sometimes and not starting other times. when i would turn the ignition you could hear the starter make a click noise like juice was getting to it (just one click when ignition was turned to on). sometimes I could jiggle the gear shift and the truck would start. now even that wont work. when I turn the ignition all i get is the click down by the starter so I know juice is getting down there. Its just the one click every time i hit the ignition. not a multiple clicking like the celenoid going out, but one louder click.

sounds more like the starter is just not engaging. maybe like its froze up. this starter has been on the truck about 2 years now. its the 3rd starter ive put on the truck in almost 10 years so i guess thats good.

anyhow does this sound like the starter just needs replaced or something else. im thinking the starter just needs replaced.

Sounds like a bad starter,I would make sure all the wires and cables are in good shape and tight,and the battery terminals are clean before you pull the starter though.Just t be sure.

Thanks, thats kinda what I thought. I checked the battery terminals already, they looked ok. I still need to check the wiring. I really hate pulling the starter, even though its not that hard, so I wanted to check first and make sure it wasnt something else.

It could be a number of things, it could be worn or corroded brushes in the starter. Try giving the starter a good rap and see if it will start if it does it is bad brushes. I would also check the battery, and see how much voltage is getting to the battery terminal on the starter motor selenoid.

Do you have an auto? If you do, it sounds like it could be your neutral safety switch. At least from what you said about jiggling you shift lever and it worked.

I don't think it would be the nss switch becuase he was getting a click at the selenoid if it wasn't doing anything it might be the switch. I would assume it is on the motor feed side of the circiut. You could always use a screwdriver and jump the "b" and "s" terminals on the selenoid, to determine if it is your starter/solenoid or something on the ignition switch side.

Mine will do this also. Only I have to turn the key 3 times. Then it always goes on the 4th try of the key.

It doesn't always do this, but when it does its the 4th time it starts.

I wonder if this is because I previously took my solenoid apart and rotated the copper disc 180 degrees to reuse that part and I don't have something quite right when put back together.
