WTB HEI distributor

I posted this in the 73-87 parts board but I thought I'd give it a shot here too.

I've got a 400 small block of 74-80 vintage in my 71. I want to upgrade from ponts to HEI. I'm looking for a distributor in good running condition with vacuum advance. I would prefer one with a more powerful coil than stock but in the end the budget rules all...

welp you see, it was about 10 degrees outside in southern mn, i had just picked up a lady friend and we were going for a drive. I couldnt afford to buy light oil for winter on the last change so i used the 15w40 out of the 55 gallon barrel. so i get on it at a light and all of a sudden the truck just dies. after i heard a loud snap. couldnt get the truck restarted so i call my dad to come tow my chev to the mechanic and he pulled the distributor out to find half the teeth gone (bought the hei from the junkyard for $35) figures, he looks at the cam and notices teeth missing there so i had him put in a cam and then he put on a brand new hei and out the door i went.

running oil too long will also cause it to do that...i get trucks in the shop all the time that dont change there oil often enough and it in tern locks the distributor up and strips the teeth off the cam, distributor and usually the timing chain ....

i change it every 3000 so i dont think i ran it too long, i think it was just too thick with a high volume pump and possibly a hairline fracture in the dist. gear.

Something to avoid... One more good reason for the drudgery of maintenance.

Thanks racer94, PM sent

72_Chev_Truck how much is cheap? From the looks of the pics you've already taken the gear off, is the shaft hurt?

i think its good besides the gear, you can slide the shaft up and down in the housing if i remember right, but maybe that is something that can be fixed. cheap is $10 shipped
