Rochester 4 Barrel Carb Question

I have a 350 in my truck with a 4 Barrel Rochester Carb. If has been running horribly for as long as I've had it and may have just found out why. I compared it to another truck with the same carb. There both automatics and I noticed I'm missing a piece of metal that runs from the side of the choke and into the manifold. What difference would this (kickdown linkage?)
make in how the truck warms up and idles? Also if anyone has any pictures that would be great. Thanks

It makes all the difference in the world while it's cold. The heat riser governs how much the choke opens or closes until the engine is warmed up completely.

BC is right, cold starts are difficult at best without the choke linkage. Sorry I don't have pics but someone here should post some for you. You may find a small bi-metal spring in the manifold; one end of the linkage goes there. If it's broken, you can get one at any auto parts store. Good luck!
