New Member's First Post-Door Handle Help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello everyone-this is my first post although I have been cruising the board for a couple of weeks now. What a great place filled with knowledgeable people! I recently purchased a ’72 Cheyenne and am excited to work on it. I just replaced my brake master cylinder and now it seems like a booster is next-but I need some help on a simpler problem now. Most of my experience with older cars has been the work I’ve done on my ’68 volvo 1800s which is different ball of wax to say the least. I am trying to reattach a interior door handle to the Cheyenne and for the life of me can not figure out how to mount the clip on the handle so that it clips onto the spindle- I feel like a complete idiot! It's possible my spindle is the shorter version an from a older door but I don’t think so. Could someone please post a pic of how the clip goes on the handle befor it mounts on the spindle? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Yeah sometimes it seems silly the things we go to question, but then sometimse they just don't make sense till they are pointed out. Welcome to the board and a wealth of knowledge.

By the way, the little clip is commonly referred to as an "Oh Jesus" clip, because of the tendancy of the owner to scream "OH JESUS!" as it shoots past their head when removing it.

Thanks 7T2. I tried it that way and it didn't clip into place. Maybe it is a shorter door spindle thats my problem?

When you put it on you have to give it a pretty good push or tap it with a rubber mallet. The pieces of spring that are protuding into the hole where the shaft goes need to be pushed out by the end of the shaft so the handle will slide down and then the springs will snick into the grove about ½" down the shaft.

OK, 3 things.......

7T2, while your picture is helpful.....The clip is on wrong. It goes in from the other side. Those little bumps (on the left in your pic) are there to keep it from sliding on too far. If it goes in too far the handle can fall off. The bends that fit into the grove move off-center to a narrower place on the shaft.

Second, You shouldn't need a mallet. If the handle fits the splines properly with-out the clip being installed (check it first) then it only takes a little pressure to get it back on. The taper on the end of the shaft opens the clip, you might need to turn it a bit to align the splines.

Third, it depends upon how you got it apart. (That is the question most people ask) If you stretched the clip, it may not fit right.

I always heard the "Jesus clip" was because........once it flies across the room....only Jesus knows where it went.

So longhair, from what you are saying, it sounds to me like it goes in front of the bumps on the left side of the pic not over them? Is that right?

THERE ARE ACTUALLY BUMPS ON BOTH SIDES, ONE SIDE HAS ONE, THE
OTHER SIDE HAS TWO, BOTH WILL WORK, ONE WAY WILL BE TIGHTER.

Longhair's right, my bad.

While there IS a standoff on the other side as well (hard to see in the picture), mounting it that way would make it really difficult to get the clip off with a door handle removal tool.

Thanks for all of the welcomes and the help. My clip was bent. Went to the parts store, got a new one and it snapped right on-no mallet needed.
