Stupid Question...
Do I have to change the ring and pinion when changing over from 3.08 to 3.73? Or can I just change the ring?

YES, ring and pinions are matched sets, not to mention the tooth count is probably different between the two pinions. Even if they were the same the ring and pinion form wear patterns to each other once installed. You must install a ring and pinion set and I believe you will also need a carrier when going from 3.08 to 3.73.

Alot of times the ring will have the same amount of teeth, it's the pinion size that changes. The ring gear is just thinner.

Ok, just curious.
I have all three; ring, pinion, and the carrier. They were all from the same rear end so it is a matched set. I was just trying to be lazy... FOILED AGAIN! |

As long as you know for sure that it's a match, you should be good to go. You will still have to set the lash. That means new crush sleeve and shims. If it is still in the donor rear end and you are going to try and tackle it yourself, measure the amount of shims on each side of the carrier bearings and this may give you a starting point and save you some install, torque, measure, remove, install, torque and measure...... You get my meaning Not trying to shy you away from this, but sometimes it may be better to farm out the labor. :p
have fun and good luck Larry
