Smile Cab progress

Some time back we bought an AC cab for my son's truck and this winter we are swapping it out. The new cab is ready to go so we recently removed the old cab. The frame and engine will be tidied up before installation of the AC cab but here are the latest pics of the cab removal. We used two 1/2 ton hoists to pick up the cab/front end assembly. Starting at 9:00 a.m. after driving the truck into the the shop we had the engine out and the cab on the trailer by 2:00 p.m. The first pic is of the AC cab which will be replacing the old cab. The other pics show the cab as it was was being removed and then on the trailer.

Wow! What was wrong with the old cab, besides no ac? I hope to pull the 72 C30 cab in the next week or two and get it ready to replace the cab on my 70 GMC. I plan on taking 1 year to do it.

It looked good, just going for the A/C?
Is the cab going onto something else or is it up for sale/trade?
Nice shop.

That must be one helluva ceiling fan to hoist a cab (pic #3).

yeah, it's the latest thing, you hoist the cab, then hit high on the ceiling fan, then as the fan spins the cab, all the rust comes flying off. So if it were my truck, the fan would need hyperspeed.

We are changing the cab just to get AC. The old cab is slated to replace the Black 4x4 cab. The picture does not show the rust that the cab is full of.

get er done!!

Great progress and thanks for sharing its great motivation for the rest of us.
What did you use for pick points when attaching chains to cab and clip?

Also whats about ceiling that anchors are mounted to? I am going to sheet rock my shop ceiling one day and would like to add necessary reinforcements to carry these types of loads.

We do have a few projects and trucks. The 56 Chevy belongs to my son-in-law and it is finished. It was one tough project!

I have high quality help from my son's and son-in-law and we all like trucks so we end up with a lot of them and most of them remain at my farm.

On the pick points for the cab pickup. We use the radiator support for the front and for the rear of the cab we hook up two straps to the cab rails protecting the back of the cab with cardboard. The cab has to be able to take it if there is rust then we make a different hookup. Straps should be wide
and strong. The front part can use chain but straps are needed to protect the cab in the rear.

We did a lot of reenforcement on the ceiling structure and limit loads to 500 lbs. per lifting point. Since the structure can be different, I would suggest making sure of the strength of the joists and what is needed before hanging a hoist on the ceiling.
