Pictures of a 72 LWB I am looking at

I took a look at this 72 longbed yesterday. It seemed to run really well. I am thinking about making an offer on it.

Its a 350 with a 4spd. There is only one spot of bad rust, that is on the door for the storage compartment under the bed. There is some surface rust under the hood, under the doors, and a few other sports. Nothing a little sanding and POR15 can't take care of. The underside is a little surface rust, but again, no realy bad rust or holes.

The engine is original, but has an Edelbrock intake and full-length headers. The owner says it has 258K on it. It does not smoke on start up nor does it smoke durring opperation. The starter, alternator, and battery will more than likely need to be replaced sometime soon. The owner has installed an electric fuel pump and replaced all of the rubber fuel lines. The transmission shifts fine, although the shifter does have a fair amount of slack in it. It has disc brakes up front and stops great.

The owner does have a box full of new weatherstripping, window felts, and sun visors. Both vent windows do not stay attached on the bottoms. It does need a new seat cover, carpet, and a new dash pad.

The paint is original, it has never been repainted. It does have a dent in the door, but that shouldn't be too difficult to repair as there is no crease in it. The rear bumper has to go. The front bumper has a small dent in it near the top. It does need some new taillight trim and a headlight bucket. The grill surround does have a few dings in it.

It will need new tires as they are a little small in diameter and have cracked. It feels like it needs shocks too.

All in all, it seems like a fairly solid truck. They are asking $2100obo. I was thinking about affering $1700 cash and see where it goes from there. What do you guys think? I have been wanting a 67-72 for a while now, hopefully I can pick this one up.

Seems like an Ok deal to me. Weird seeing a vehicle from Cal with rusted door bottom...stuff around your area normally have rust problems? Shouldn't take too much work to make it nice, unlike the stuff I usually fix. If you like it, I say buy it.

That thing would be worth double that here right now. Not a decent truck to be found locally.

That's a pretty rare color combo if I remember correctly. Seems like people were talking about that green over yellow at some point on the board.

That truck is realy solid....do you really need to ask us??? I'd cut-out and replace that door in the bed with a patch panel...I hate those doors, they look odd. I paid 1200 for a solid good running '67 back in 1996. Guess prices have gone up. Go for it!!

I know this doesn't pertain to what you were asking, but what kind of camera did you use for the pics?

Canon Powershot A80. Its a great camera. I would prefer a digital SLR, but this one gets the job done just fine. I sized those down from 1600x1200.

Does anyone know what kind of 4spd is in this truck? How about the gear ratios for 1st through 4th? I have thought about swapping the rear gears for something a little higher, like 3.07s. 3.73s would be buzzing the engine pretty bad with the 70mph freeway speeds around here. Its not going to be an everyday driver, mostly a second vehicle/parts chaser/tow vehicle, but I would like to be able to drive it to work if I have to.

Part of me wants to hold out for a SWB, but I have doubts about finding one for less than $2000. Plus this is a fairly rust free, good running truck. I have seen people shorten the frame, which is definetly and option, but I don't know if it is even worth the trouble.

I have a bunch of questions about it, so maybe I should start listing them....

What kind of rear end do these trucks come with?

Are there large holes under the side trim? I would like to remove it, but I am not sure how I should go about filling the holes left behind.

What do the front calipers and brake pads interchange with? Are they the same as later model GM trucks and cars?

Since it is a rare color combo and has quite a few options, would I be frowned upon for wanting to get rid of the green and paint it a solid, but original yellow? How about getting rid of the storage door?

Does the truck look lowered to you? I am wondering if they heated the springs at some point. The suspension is really soft.

What size 15" tires would you recommend? I was thinking 275/60R15 for the rear and 225/70R15 for the front.

If you really want a swb bad, then maybe you should wait. If a lwb might be Ok, you could always fix this one up some and get a swb frame to put under it later. Frames are for sale on here all the time. The rear end should be a 12 bolt with 5 lug axles. I think you can use later calipers on these trucks, but I am not sure on that one. Most parts stores will carry the proper ones anyway. The trim holes can easily be welded up and filled, although there are quite a few of them to do. The soft suspension might be worn out shocks, especially if the truck bounces alot. My rear coils were heated up, and they ride rough as heck. The small profile tires on the truck you are looking at make it sit lower than if you had standard 235/75/15's on it. Your tire size sounds Ok to me, will make a big difference in look of the truck. I do not think anyone will criticize you for getting rid of the storage door, or repainting it a nice color. There are tons of these trucks still around, and just because something is rare does not always mean it adds value. I had a special paint optioned lime green 71 years ago and it hurt the sale, not helped. If it was red/blue/black/silver it would have sold much faster. If you want it something else, do it. It can always be repainted back later if need be. Hope you get the truck, it looks like a good deal.

That's a good deal for a truck with that many options. Welcome to the board.

Looks like a fair buy, especially if he'll do it for 1700. I live in AZ and am a bit wierd about rust, so I'm a little biased. Like one poster said, Cali truck with rust? Hmmmm. Cool truck though... H.
