Ratrod style trucks and flat black paint
I am curious what you guys think. I like pretty much like all hotrods and I do like the flat black or suede stlye paint jobs you see. I like the wide whites and red steelies or a complete custom with lots of billet. But what I am really wondering is, do you think the current ratrod rage is something that you see coming to an end in a few years or do you think its here to stay. Just wondering what your thoughts may be.

I think more rat rods have been getting coverage.There has been real ratrods since people have been modifying cars!The new trend seams to be guys that have the money to build a realy nice truck,then they put on an expensive flat paint job!

Posted my "rat rod" bike over there. It seems to be the up and coming "hot trend" right now. I'm seeing more and more bikes done this way. I've been seeing a lot of "suede" cars too, but I'm not sure there are any more around than usual. I think a big part of it is you can make a car look really good in primer, but painting it with a finish coat takes more skill. It's easy to bondo/primer/bondo again/primer and come up with something that looks pretty good that you can drive around indefinately, all the while telling people how sweet it's going to look when it's "done". The real shock comes when you actually finish it off and realize just how much more work should have been done to it before you painted it. In the case of the bike I think it's a little different. I wanted something unique and that is the route I chose to take. |

My truck has been in suede primer with a sealer coat since '96....no dents or rust....I'll paint it someday....

I had my bike in flat black too. I had a Harley Nighttrain that had the engine done in krinkle flat black and i bought it wrecked so when i rebuilt it i put a 240 wide phat tail on it and painted it in flat black. I ALWAYS got alot of compliments on it and it was a heck of a lot cheaper than chroming everything like everyone else does .... plus it only took a few minutes to wash unlike those chromed out bikes.
I'm planning to do another similar bike when i finish my truck. |

You can have flattening agent added to any paint mix,even metalic.Then add a flat clear.I think this is a cool look.The Rat-Rod is a current trend of an old style.Now that it`s back,I think it will stay around.

I personally would like two trucks. One would be a a truck made for cruising with chrome and expensive paint job and such. The other would be flat black and have the baddest, meanest motor/tranny/rear end I could build. Screw the paint. I've alike flat black since I was like 4 just because it's there for a reason. Barns were painted red because it was the cheaper, same with trucks, it was out of necisity when looks didn't matter, just your time slip.

Check out the past 6 months or maybe more of Classic Trucks Magazine. They are building an early 60's chevy with gmc front end called Project Old School. The truck was painted suede. Looks great. I personally prefer shiny paint, but when it's done right....it looks really cool.

I was thinking of going the flat black look for a while or the primer gray. I haven't decided yet.

The rat rod thing isn't back to stay...it's always been there...in the back ground. They are just getting better coverage becouse everyone is sick of seeing the same old same old.
Personally, gray don't look too good. It looks more like a work in progress instead of an intended look. |

It might just be me, but I don't see how anyone could dislike the ol skool style of finishing. It doesn't have to be a flat black....it could be a flat orange, purple, blue etc... These are the kinds of cars that paved the road for hot rodders all over. Here are some fine example pics of well done street rods

I love rat rods, i would build one if i was a little smaller..... so i made my truck my rat rod and dont worry i beat on it like a true rat rod..... no worries if it breaks then fix it, you didnt build it strong enought the first time.... some pics of it for u

longhorn man- My professors son is doing that with an 87 caprice.... i just sold him some flowmasters and he is lowering it and painting it flat black.... should look cool when it is done...
