what does this thingy do???

found a 69-70 one ton in the junkyard today and it has something called a marvel mystery oiler on it.its a round canister deal bolted to the inner core support.the truck also has some kind of switch inside on the left side of the instrument cluster that looks like it has a gm knob on it.any ideas?????

The switch to the left of the instrument panel could be for switching between sending units in the in-cab tank and an auxiliary tank. Is there any other evidence of an auxiliary tank? Tank switch valve on the floor of the cab, an extra tank or two, RPO NL2 on the option sheet on the glove box door?
