3-on-the-tree slop fix! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Dunno if this is the right forum, but it's simple parts for a good fix! My shift linkage was really sloppy, so I got to looking at it at the column under the hood after an engine swap...saw that it could be shimmed up a bit. Since I work at a Peterbilt dealership, I found just the thing when I was pulling parts for a customer awhile back! They are the nylon bumper bolt washers, part# D8400-5636, for about 50 cents apiece. I just put one on each side of the little arms, snugged the nuts back up and liberally squirted with some white lithium grease. Now, almost all the "slop" is gone & I have better shifts with no grinding gears!

if this works we should have it moved to the "FAQ" page for all of us old-timers that still drive 3-on-the-tree!!
some of these young'uns dont even know how to shift 'em they just put in a floor shifter.

Graywolf, I'm at the Mobile, AL dealership...kingsolver72, I wish I had capabilities to post pictures...maybe in the future!

...and big blue 72, I grew up on these babies, with a '49 3100 three window and a '58 Apache, both of which I wish I could have found some way to keep! But they were sold for scrap years ago

The place to put these is where the shift arms bolt up at the column's arms under the hood, right at the firewall. These nylon washers are JUST the right thickness. Those who still use column shift will know where this is!

Maybe someone out there can post a picture of their set-up?

My dad bought the one I am driving new in '73 and I got from him about a year ago and it had a lot of slop in it too. I went to the local dealership and was able to buy the bushings that go in the linkage and they were about .45 each. It helped but it didn't take all of the slop out. Pictures would be great if somebody could post them (bud45).
