are there trucks in the desert?

I was chatting with a guy last night. And he said there are alot of abandoned cars and trucks from the 50's & 60's just laying in the desert where people have left them. He claims his brother picked up a 46 chevy that was perfect except for no motor and a missing rear fender, just west of vegas.....
So,is this true? Are there 67-72's laying out there to donate? Anybody live in Nevada?...Just curious.

I got my '53 Chevy that way and a friend of mine got a '37 Chevy Coupe that was out in the middle of nowhere (full of bullet holes). So I would say yes. But a lot of it has to do with luck.

I have lived here for most of my life and spent alot of my youth riding and partying in the Arizona desert and YES there are alot of old cars and trucks laying around in the desert, and they are in fine shape except for a few common problems:

1. hundreds of bullet holes in them
2. being run over by every drunken 4WD owner that has ever ventured into the desert
3. being set on fire by teenagers
4. any other destructive thing that can be done to a vehicle

Don't belive the hype - if that legend was true I would be out in the desert looking for my next ebay listing.

There are forgotten highways littered with vehicles in pristine condition throughout NV, NM and AZ. Many are in the area known only as "51". The occupants are still there too, 40 to 50 years later, with the same look of twisted horror on their faces as they experienced the "blast". Mummified for all eternity by the arid desert air. Men, women, and families frozen in time...radios still blairing "See the USA in your Chevrolet..."

Just think of all the holes in public road signs where there are people everywhere and not much sport. then think of those same guys out where there isn't anyone for miles and miles with a couple bricks of ammo and nothing to shoot. You would be the luck ones to get 1st holes in one!!

One of the best ways to find cars is going on drives in back woods, side roads, and such, and just stopping and asking if the rigs are for sale. I just Moved to Kentucky and was driving on a back road in the hills, and found a 67-72 short box fleet side (seen rear of truck only). Look to be sitting for quite a few years.

definetally true around here too. i know where 10-15 of our style trucks are sitting in fields within a few miles from my house. i pass a 68 swb, and a 48-53 or so year model panel truck on my way to work everyday and they are a mile from any house or anything, just sitting in the woods and have been that way for years it looks like. kentucky is also littered with old cars/trucks everytime i go there i look in the woods and find something new, especially this time of the year.

One good area for exploration is Indian Reservations.. When precapica (SP) comes around the kids go out and buy their dream hotrod, Then in the means of no money they blow something up, It sits in their backyards.. You ask and you may be able to buy.. When I was a kid, i was raised on the Spokane Indian Res. I bought a lot of cars from the locals doing just this.. They cars all needed some kind of work..

I have posted a few times of the trucks and cars sitiing in yards Within 50 miles around here.. Over in Yerrington there's quite a few 67-72s in yards in different stages of disassembly. I don't have the want nor the space to pick them up for parts or whatever..

I have ridden Horse back And truck, all over the Flats and Mountains west of Vegas for the last 20 years, What I came across was what Shawn described.. But then again I never did see the Little Green men of the area Jeff's describing either.. I think I have more faith in them then of the cars/trucks.

I know where a decent Panel is sitting in a Junkyards back yard for a reasonable price.... Not Quite free, but reasonable.... Saw it just Yesterday...........

Here where i am they like to bury cars along creek banks and fill with durt and put mobile homes on them till the next flood comes and washes it away. I will have to get some pics of the cars here going to waste. Ex. Right across the street from me,

There is even one guy here has a 70 CUDA hemi car buried in the front lawn just to keep people from getting it. His cousin said when he dies he is getting a trackhoe and getting( HIS CAR )

I found a '53 Belair 2 door post on the side of a ditch bank. I asked everyone around and no one claimed it. The only problem was that this was a pretty serious ditch bank and the car was almost standing on it's rear bumper. There were about 5 olds cars there, holding the ditch bank together. This was the only one that looked worth dragging out. The right rear portion of the car was submersed in approx a foot and a half of water. It was in fairly rough shape but could definately be restored, but, I thought at least , it would make a nice parts car for my '53. A friend of mine's dad worked for the city and had access to some pretty serious machinery. We tried all day with a cat and a dozer and could not get that car out. It's become a part of the earth now. And it still sits. Probably for the next 30 years.

Another story.....another friend of mine lives on a farm and loves to tell the story of how his grandfather was having a hard time with the center of one of his fields sinking in repeatedly. So....to make a long story short. It's now got about 10-15 cars buried in there holding it up. Everything from Model T's on up through cars of the 50's.

when I was a kid, I remember a farmer who lived near my uncle. He made a "septic field" by digging a big hole & stacking cars and trucks in it. The car bodies eventually fill with "stuff" & rustout.

There`s a`68 Panel laying in the Nevada desert,in Carson City,in Junkyard John`s backyard.My buddy was working in Saudi Arabia a while back.He said they`re in junkyards & in use(ofcourse)all over there.I`d like to fly over,kill a terrorist or two(good ol`American butt-kickin`),then drive one home.Problem with that is the title`s in Arabic and I have a hard enough time at the DMV as it is.

I found my 2wd Jimmy driving home on a backroad in Kentucky. Spent 2 weeks negotiating and then hauled it home... The guy felt that he got the better of me... if he only knew!

Bad thing about Kentucky is people like their old cars and usually will tell you "I'm gonna fix'er up one day..." I've heard that hundreds of times. Usually I will hang around and talk with them for a while then leave my number and say if they ever change their mind to call, I have bought 2 or 3 cars that way.

Makes you feel kinda like Indiana Jones...

I live in Vegas. And true you do see a lot of rust free trucks, but not so many just lying by the road unaccounted for. I will share a couple of picks with you (if my first attempt at it goes well). The below photos suck as they were made with a phone camera on the scene of a fire I was on west of vegas the other day It was on a large piece of private property and had gobs of 67-72 trucks . I have photos of one of the K-20's that burned. That panel survived but some others were not so lucky.

i drive on the side for FedEx Home Delivery in the country outside Richmond VA, and see old cars and trucks all the time. I could tell you where every truck like ours as well as all the 2nd Gen Camaros are on my route (that I have seen) I know there are still plenty more I haven't seen. I love making deliveries from Summit or some restoration place, I'm always trying to see what the recipient is working on. I've seen some really nice vehicles in peoples garages too.

On the backroads here in upstate south carolina its nothin to go for a ride 'round the country and spy MANY 60-72 chevy trucks, the 67-72 seem more plentiful, and early 60's to 79 f@rds on any given day. I know a guy who has a junkyard, aka his backyard, full of early 50's to late 70's chevy trucks. Tried for a couple years....he won't sell me ANYTHING!!!!! I don't understand, they just sit there and ROT! Also, my neighbor bought a 71 swb stepside, olive green with white top, brand new back in december 1970. He still drives it everyday, its his only vehicle, and last time I talked to him it had 376,000 miles on it. I KID YOU NOT!!!
