gas mpg

what would a stock 283' and stock drivetrain get mpg?

There are alot of variables that can affect fuel mileage, so this is probably just a close guess. I guess you are referring to the drivetrain of a 63-66 1/2 ton pickup, probably with a 3 spd standard or powerglide. I don't know what rearend you have but the most common was the 3.73. It also depends on what carburator the 283 has, I think the trucks only came with 2 bbl carbs back then but anything could have been put on the engine. Some 4bbl carbs can actually get better fuel mileage than a 2bbl because of smaller primary jets and venturis, providing you drive it easy and stay out of the secondarys. My best guess would be around 12-14 mpg, maybe a little better with the right conditions. Maybe someone that has one with that combination can give you some more accurate numbers. Years ago I had a 65' with a 327 4bbl, 3 spd and 3.73 rearend, 10-12 was about the best it got but gas was only forty cents a gallon. You could probably do alot better with a 3.08 gear and an overdrive trans. Hope that helps.
