63 gmc 2x4 to 4x4?

i have a 63 gmc w/ a bb v6 and sm-420 i want to make it a 4x4. i have done some research and searched the boards i know it is easier to do a chassis swap instead of a front cross member swap, but what year would be easier to swap w/ little mods to body mounts, i was thinking of a newer chassis and keeping the v6 and sm-420. what t.c. would work w/ the sm420?

thanx,
jim

rockwells were bolted behind the sm420. I also believe adapters are made to adapt the sm420 to newer transfercases, advanced adapters for one. You could mount a divorced transfercase though, might be easier.
If the 60-66 frames are close to the newer frames, you could probably remove the front spring brackets from a newer truck and mount them to your 63. Did 60-66 trucks have different engine mounting positions? That will dictate wether the engine needs to be moved back for front diff/oil pan interference and driveshaft length. The v6 was mounted in the 67 and up frames so if you started w/ say a 71/72 frame you could fab your own body mounts.

I have a 1964 short bed 4x4 GMC Which is a pretty rare bird these days. I am parting it out, all but the cab. So if you decide to go this route feel free to E-Mail me @ intensete@hotmail.com. the truck came with a factory 4" lift and was on the road a year or so ago with 12.50x35x15 BFG Mud Terrain T/A'S. I presently have way too many projects going right know and the old lady is screeching daily. SOUND FAMILLIAR

My roomate's 63 chevy is undergoing that build up. It's been converted to leaf springs front and rear and plans call for a divorce mounted transfer case, new brakes, and a few other things. We've got the suspension where it should be and just have to do a lot of drilling and/or maybe welding to make it permanent. We still have a lot to do and hope to get the rest done in the spring.
