396 (402) BBC For sale

Ok guys, I gonna officially put it up for sale.

1965 model 396, (bored .030)
Oval port heads
Cast iron holley pattern intake
Casting numbers are;
Block # 3855961 Date C 13 5 (or G 13 5, hard to tell for sure)
Heads # 3856206 Date D 3 5 (right head) Didn't take the valve cover off the left head yet.
Intake # 3866943 Date D 12 5

Rebuilt by the local machine shop a few years ago. (Stock rebuild, nothing fancy at all). Guessing 30-40K??
Pulled it out of my 72 this spring to put the 454 in.

Runs good, the bottom end, and heads are good but it needs gaskets and rings. It burns oil!
Carries right at 70 psi oil press, at 2000 rpm or so AFTER it's warmed up.

The intake and oil pan are loosely bolted on right now, (thought I was going to have to use them for the 454), but it wouldn't take a lot to make it run if somebody wanted to hear it run.

Asking $500 OBO for it.

it's worth that...a core is worth about $300 - bare block at least in the northeast it is (454 core is worth more...) freakin racers blowing them all up so we can't use them

why is it burning oil @ 30K-40k??? that seems a little odd to me

but even @ .030 over you can still go more with it. they can get about .090 over (which is basically a factory 402 (396 that is .030) and bored .060)

any thoughts on why it would be blowing oil @ 30-40K on a rebuild???

Guessing it's cause of getting hot and took the tension out of the rings. When I first started pulling my RV trailer with it, it wouldn't stay cool. Either the radiator was plugged or just plain wouldn't do the job. I ran it up to 240 degrees and over a couple of times. After I got enough $ I ordered the Griffin radiator that's in the truck now and never had any more problems with heating. It's been probably 3 years since I put the Griffin in and it's run fine except the oil consumption kept getting worse. Just finally decided to swap it out for the 454.
It doesn't seem to blow smoke except when you first start it and when you change gears.
Guessing it uses about a quart every 150-200 miles.
Guessing because I haven't had a speedometer in my truck in quite a while.
About all the truck does during the summer is pull the camper to a jobsite and then it sits there and I drive my S-10 where ever I need to go. Winter time I use it to cut/haul wood cause that's what keeps me warm.
The motor has been in the shop on the stand you see it on since this spring. It's out of the weather but it is getting dusty and looking at the pictures I see I need to put a cap on the valve cover hole to keep the dust out.

Let me know what you think, I like the old 396s. Is it a 2 or four bolt main, block this casting number was both head # is 3856206....65-66...oval..CLOSED..396, 97cc chamber
so it prolly has high compression righ?

Do you have any other parts avaiable for this motor, like distributer, carbDo you have a water pump????

Lookin to replace the tickin ole, 292 in my C30

I'm about 3 hrs north of St. Louis. Just out side of Kahoka. You're more than welcome to come and take a look if ya want.

2 bolt main.

Yup, I'm guessing it at right around 10.5:1 or so.

I used the water pump on the 454 but I still have the short style pump that was on the motor when I got it. Might be good, might not. It'd be good for a core if nothing else I guess. It can go with the motor.
I THINK I have the distributer that came in it also. It's the points type. If I have it it could go too. I ran an HEI in it.

I do have a 3310 Holley 750 carb I MIGHT let go with it, (for extra $). I'd have to think about that awhile though.

It'd make a good replacement for that 292!!

Like I said I can make it run on the stand, (have to hook it to the cherrypicker so it doesn't decide to take off on it's own ), with just a little time. I'd have to rob some parts off my truck, but it can be done.

Block and head casting #'s are in the first post.
Might be able to work out delivery in a couple of weeks for gas $, (after I get my S-10 back together and make sure it's gonna work out).

KB makes a nice piston for a 396 block and a 454 crank, comes out to 434ci. Lots of torque and decent mileage.[for a big block]

396

Sounds like you have a complete 1965 Passenger car 325 HP 396 engine .The last number in the casting number for the intake an 8 instead of a 3 by any chance? My book shows a 97.1 cc combustion chamber. Nice price on the complete engine .If only I was closer it would be in my barn.Frank

book

I have a couple of the "Chevrolet By The Numbers" books by Alan L. Colvin .1965-1969 and 1970-1975 .I use them all the time for parts I sell on Ebay. Great books. Bought them cheap on Ebay. It will also show what trans ,carb, etc the engine came with by looking at the numbers stamped in the block in front of the passenger head .They should be something like TO425LB . Let me know what is there. I like to decode these kind of parts. I am about 3 hours from Grand Prarie ,Tx.

Mine is TO423LB, (you were really close!), and then there is S240109 on the same place up closer to the intake.
Old chevy; I really don't know how to ship something like this but if you can make arrangements or whatever I'd do what I can.
Right now I'm at the "sale almost pending" stage, LOL.
A couple of guys from KC are wanting to come and look at it.

396

325 HP 396 assembled April 23,1965. Had a Powerglide and a Holley 4 barrell from a Belair,Biscayne ,or Impala. By the way ,the first 396's were built starting Feb. 15 1965. That is an early motor. S240109 is the last part of the vin number of the car it came from.Good Luck. Frank
