What kind of transmission do I have

I don't speak fluent manual transmission in old GM vehicles. My 72 1 ton dually has a big, clunky, 4 speed in it.

What transmission would it be?

I'd think it would be the 465 reverse down and to the right, Granny low up to the left!

I stole this pic off ebay. This is a SM465. Does it look like this?, because these are pretty common from 1968 to mid 80's trucks.

Could be a NP 435 also. I will have a round or square tag with NP 435 stamped on it.

3 on the tree could be right also. This link shows the pan differences, dimensions, top cover (aluminum or iron), PTO port locations, etc. This should make it easy for you:http://www.eastcoastk5.com/Tranny%20Tech.htm#465

I pulled a 4 speed out of a '72 GMC 1 ton and found out it's a 4 speed muncie. I'll get a pic out of a service manual later.

Muncie made the sm465 for GM. 70c10's picture is also the 4wd version you can see the flange & bottom mount for the T-case. All 3 of my trucks are sm465's some are sloppier shifting than others.

if it has an aluminum top cover, its the NP435. However it came in close and wide ratio versions, which would be indicated on the SPID label. if it has a cast iron top cover and is original, its the 465. it should have two pto ports and reverse to the pass. side and down.

The SM 465 has pto ports on both sides. The NP435 has a pto port on the pass side and the SM420 has a pto port on the driver side.

Tx,

Novak's site for 4x4's has a good picture of various manual transmissions for comparison purposes. Each picture links to a more detailed description of each tranny.

This is often caused by a break in the hardened tip of the shift lever. This is the part just below the collar that holds the lever in the tranny cover. The lever is joined to a hardened steel cap that will break, but doesn't come apart, so it just gets sloppy. If you can wiggle the hardened tip, it's broken. GM still has the new ones. They even come in chrome, but they're pricey.

It makes a big difference in the slop.

My vote would be a sm420 Reverse on that would be to the lower left.. The case has a hump on the passenger side.

nope that is a 465, M20 is GM's generic code for a 4 speed truck transmission iirc. so they used the same code for the 420 or the 465. yours has 2 pto ports so its the 465.
