68 305Ev6 Manual to auto swap, 4X4
Ok fellas, I am working on a major restoration on my late brothers truck and I need some major help from guys who are experienced with these trucks. Feel free to Read the story and see restoration pics at www.jakesgeneralstore.com scroll down to 68 GMC Lost now found.
It is a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, 305EV6 4 sp, manual steering and Brakes. I want to keep the 305EV6 motor and convert the truck to an auto and put power steering and brakes in it. I know the easy solution for the auto trans would be to dump the V6 for a more common motor but this motor in my opinion is what makes this truck so cool. Does anyone know what auto trans will bolt up to this V6 Block? I need to hook up with some V6 People. I have had one suggestion of a guy making an adapter plate, which is our plan now but I am not pleased about it. I also want to ad power steering but I am hitting road blocks there. I am told they did have power steering in a 68 4x4. I need a stuff to convert. I have tried aftermarket and they only make kits for 69 4x4 and up and 67-68 2wd I would appreciate anyone's help with this project. We have started to put the auto colum and auto pedals in. I just dont want to go back to the 4 spd.. Thanks Jake jakem@starband.net |

Have you tried www.6066gmctrucks.org? These guys really know their GMC V-6's. Try and find a parts truck that came with the GMC V-6 and optional turbo 400 auto tranny from about 1965 -1968; it will have the correct flexplate that you need to adapt to the auto tranny. I'm not sure about the auto trans/adapter/ t-case etc. questions...Hope this helps.

Jake,
I also own a 68 GMC 3/4 4x4 with a 305V6. I have added power steering and power brakes. The power steering is a little involved, but well worth the effort. Some 2wd 67-69 305's came with factory power steering. You need to find one used. It will have the pump mounting bracket and the 2 groove pulleys. The pump, steering box and hoses are the same as the 69-72 4x4. I have the NAPA part numbers for the steering arm. The bigest problem is modifying the frame. New mounting holes and dempling the frame. I can provide more info if needed. Erl

Jake,
I have a section of 4x4 frame that can be used as a pattern. I will send you the section and the part numbers. Just return it when finished. I am planning on generating a mechanical drawing of the power steering pump bracket (for Jolley's 6066 page), but it will be a couple more months. Email me your UPS address to erl@pushcorp.com Erl
