Numbers matching values

You here a lot about matching numbers all the time. Assuming one has a pretty well equipped truck (mine is a 72 swb 4x4), how much more valuable ( say at an auction), is a numbers matching truck as opposed to one that is not.

To my knowledge GM never did a matching numbers on these trucks at all like they did with cars.

MO is right. The General would put date stamped driveline from whatever they had around. I guess, just make sure everything is from before 72 on yours.

Now we gotta see some pics and more details on a loaded 72 shorty 4X4!!

Don't entirely agree. Numbers on my 71 Chev. 402 match up. I haven't looked at the trans to verify. However, there are no S/N's at all on my 71 GMC 402's block. One thing about GM, they were consistent in being inconsistent.

From my experience it doesn't mean that much. If you have a nice truck and it's built with options that most people prefer it will bring money just as quick as one that is restored to perfection, but not optioned very well.

Here is a perfect example. This truck is a 68 with features that aren't original, but most people would build it like this if they could. This guy builds them to sell them and had no problem bringing his asking price of 17500.00

That was in the car corral at Godguys in Ft.Worth. He builds one or two a year and brings them to sell. The pictures don't do it an justice. It wasn't "concourse quality" but it was a very well done truck....

fairly nice truck

Without looking brown truck overall looks fairly nice.

I think to some of us that don't completely understand "numbers matching" such as on old corvettes, muscle cars, etc. it doesn't seem to make much difference to many of our trucks. What I like to see that helps value on our trucks is that frame and cab have matching vin numbers which also match glove box door. If builder was to add correct factory options such as tach, tilt, trim, better motor, etc. those are bonuses when done right. A truck like the ochre/white 4x4 if meets my crieteria is the best foundation to build on. How much of the work is done right and all details matter more to me beyond that. Not replacing metal correctly or poor details are big deducts. Doing right comes at a price, either $$ or sweat equity.

Many of us know the raw value of parts alone when all purchased new. Big bucks but thanks to many of our vendors who pass along good parts at fair prices it can be done.

IMHO

nyncompute, great truck.

What is that black spot above the pass rear reflector? Reminds me of camper tie down brackets.

Man you guys dont miss a trick..lol Yes it is a slick tie down for a camper long ago. Seems to be an aftermarket item that was sold for these trucks. Either way it will be removed. I'll gets some more picks up but my truck looks better from about 20 feet away. Still lots of work to do to make it as nice as some of the others I see on this site.

Numbers matching is tough for our trucks. The top of the line options, like "Cheyenne Super" are highly sought after, but anybody with enough knowledge could build a very good clone.

The big auctions, like Barrett-Jackson require heavy authenticity for these trucks. I saw a box stock high-optioned 72 chevy truck go through with unbelieveably low miles, but it was the original owner and he had the the original bill of sale showing the options, which matched the glove box list, all of which looked brand new.

Beautiful truck, but ya gotta wonder...what kind of humnuck parks a nice truck like that and doesn't drive it since 1972?

By the way, looks like you have the drip rail trim on yours. That's rare. I've seen it offered in catalogs, but you don't see it very often. I don't know if it was offered by the factory or was an add-on.
