Is 10" enough?
For electric fans?
I have the opportunity to get 2 - 10" spal electric fans free, but I am unsure if they will be big enough for my truck. I searched and found some people using dual 11" but nothing about a 10". Any ideas?

I've had better luck from a single 16" or 18" fan, myself.Honestly,if you can still run your engine driven fan,I personally think it's still a better setup.Yes,electric fans free up power, but they draw precious amperage.Add this to the other electrical goodies we all have,(stereo amps, etc.)and your running out of juice unless you gotta big ol' alternator.Just my two cents, and worth about that!

I run one 16" and a 10", Depending on how much air those things move they might do the trick, but which truck is it going on? Your street truck or 4wd truck? I found that even with both my 16" and 10" on sometimes off-road it will still get a little warm, but on the street just my 16" usually keeps up just fine. I rarely use the 10".

If it were me,I'd make sure that my fan and clutch were in good shape,( the shroud is still there, right?)and if need be,upgrade to a new radiator. You can get the big block 4 core for around $200 new.I don't know what they cost, but diesal radiators are MASSIVE.In my opinion, electric fans are kind of a "looking for every ounce of power" thing.I ran them when I used to mudrace, but that was a situation where it was full throttle for 5 or 6 seconds, then your done. For heavy duty use and towing,I vote mechanical.

yea, our truck still runs mechanical with no problems. Take the 10's and sell em-
mathematically, dual 10's have 157 sq. inches of air movement (roughly), a single fan would need a diameter of 7.25" to have the same area. So by keeping your mechanical fan (say 14", 153 sq. in.), you'd only have 3 sq in less than if u went to electric. I say keep the mechanical. |
