rear fuel tank door questions

I have been reading all the other posts on this subject. My question is a little different.
I have an excellent bed and plan to relocate the fuel tank to under the bed. I really do not care about the bed and want a full sized fuel door.
Which would look best on these trucks? The choices are the later model round doors like my 90 or the square doors like the 73-up.
Anyone have any pics of this change?

yeah,i'm not to hip with the square type either. It just doesnt flow right...
I have been following the panel build-up on classic heartbeat. They used a round one, with remote pull, and that looks great. i think its from a caravan.....cant remember.

I do not want to do the filler in the side marker. Many say that they use tha filler cap with the spring loaded plunger in the center. I would guess because you cannot get your hand in that area let alone get a cap off.
I want the full sized fuel door and i don't care if I cut the bed.
mblackburnjr, do you have a link?

I have a 67 stepside, and I don't want side markers. I'm thinking of using a round door in my fender off of whatever junkyard vehicle matches the contour, especially one with a pop door....I do think that the caravans doors are fairly flat....just might work.....

These guys make awesome fuel doors. I went with the tear drop door.....They are literally right down the street from my house....Super nice people.

I think the round filler look better if you are going to use one. This is the one reference on the panel. they used a filler patch from an 86 Plymouth Voyager and grafted it in place of the stock panel's filler opening.

Hagan is pretty cool.
I like the doors on my later GM's. I do not mind the finger notch and like the place to hang the filler cap.
I think that the round door is much better than the square. Thanks guys. Decision made.

Nu2-72, if you don't mind please post some pics as you progress with this mod. I also was thinking of a round fuel door off a 1990 or so truck and woukld like to see how it goes together. Thanks.

square door option pic

This is the smallest fuel door assembly I could find (1990 Mazda 626); much smaller than the Chevy '73-up fuel doors. No finger hole but a remote release that will be in the cab. I don't think it looks out-a-place since it has margin/parting lines that blend with the rear side marker light. The side marker light fuel door is real cool but awfully small which is why I chose this route.

mocwon, not very nice of you. I make up my mind on a round door and you post this. Looks good. I do like the slightly rectangular door. It does blend better with the marker light. Better than a square door.
I will try to keep pics up to date but this will not be soon. Just getting the ducks lined up.

I'm personally gonna attempt the sidemarker fill door, but IMHO I believe rectangular door fits the style of the truck to a tee.

Mocwon, I also would like to see some pics from farther back. I can't recall seeing a square hose cover like you have used in the bed. Do all blazer tank conversions have this, or is there another reason for this? Thanks.

Just take the easy way out. Put in fuel cell, cut hole in bed, attach filler neck. Then you don't have to do anything to your bed.

doors

I have used 73-87 sqare body chevys and about the same year dodge square bodies. I did these for customers. I have used the round ones from the 88-98 chevys that looks the best i think. That square door off mazda, looks great though. I would like to see them all.

You can use the flat ones they offer and shape it yourself. The contour is not very radical on a bedside. I mounted mine on the floor of my fleetside. I'll look you up next time i'm in Vegas. I am down there all the time for work. I work for Southwest Gas. I'm scheduled to be in Vegas for 8 months starting in November. That's if the software I'll be testing is on schedule.

I did the rear fuel cell on my 67 and i didnt like any of the options so i just decided to cut a hole in the bed floor and im glad i did. Now i can fuel my truck from either side so im never having to wait for a pump or worry about trying to bust some kind of crazy turn at a crowded gas station.

LOL! Ya, I have seen some crazy stuff happen with people "racing" to get to the gas pumps.

Little off topic but here goes. I am at the station pumping my gas. Young girl pulls up to the pump next to me and jumps out of the car. Gets to the pump and and the fuel door is on the other side of the car. So, she gets back in the car and cuts a "U" turn to the other side of the pumps. Gets out and Lo and Behold, the fuel door is still on the wrong side of the car. She got back in and drove off. My wife and I lost it. No, she was not blonde.
Anyway, I like the look of the round door on my 90 Chevy. My 72 is a 3/4 4x4 and will have 33" tires and a lift kit so I want a large fuel door. I think a small door would look out of place.
I also like the lip inside the door to hang the cap. And I think that the 67-72 trucks are great looking trucks. The square door would come too close to the 73 model year and I would like to keep the distance from those years.
