Finally, work on MY truck.
I finally got a chance to do some work on my 70 instead of the daughter's 82. Yanked the bed off and started cleaning it up(1 & 2). Spent yesterday and today welding up all the little holes one of the POs put in it (3, 4 & 5). Bed is really clean. I have never seen bolts with threads that clean even on a year old truck. I have no idea what type of silve paint they used on it, but it STINKs. I almost think they used a brush on it. Well at least it flakes and peals off easy, so stripping it off should be easier.

I also had to fix a tear/poke in the front of the bed. Unfortunately my welding skills leave a lot to be desired. The metal was real weak, so I ended up cutting and making a patch to put in it (1 & 2). Cleaned up my original tailgate and put some rust covertor on it for the time being. Last thing today was getting rid of the GMC gate to turn her back into a Chevy.
Man it is sure nice having a shop to do this stuff in now. Hopefully she'll be running again by the end of the week. Going to swap out the points dizzy and put in the HEI. Thanks for letting me ramble, its real good to be working on her again.

That looks great! Are you going to keep the tire carrier fender or replace it?

Bill, good to see some progress. I recognize that light green fender!! If you decide to keep the side marker filler, I did the latest one a little different than that one ( and slightly different than the instructions that are posted on the board. I'll offer to re-do that one for you if you are near Jackson or if I get down there any time soon. Just let me know and I will pick up the parts from the junk yard.

67ChevyRedNeck - I'm keeping it. I actually traded the unrusted fender without the cutout from this bed for an unrusted one that has the cutout. I like the look of the spare on the side.
Putter. Oh yeah, I'm keeping it. You'll have to let me know what you did different. If I get the truck running again tomorrow I'll have to speed up the blazer tank install.

Bill, keep on sending the great photos. You're 6 months ahead of me and saving me hours of frustration. It may be weird, but I like the spare tire carrier look. You using the original bracket, or going to fab one?
If my memory serves me, I can recall seeing these trucks customized with a spare on BOTH sides. Anybody else that old?

Dubie, grill is fubar thanks to Hurrican Ivan
Robert wright - I've seen them on both sides, but I don't recall ever seeing them with the cutout on both sides. And yes, I have the stock brakets to mount the spare.

Bill,
Congrats on your progress, and great pics. You get her going under her own power and you and I can do side by side burnouts on Hwy. 90 @ Cruisin' the Coast next year.
