Just done this today!
Take the steering wheel off........have to have a steering wheel puller. Then you have to pull the locking plate off.................also have to have a tool made especially for that, the remove the 3 screws holding the turn signal cam down, then pull the little white plastic thing that is above the torx screw that holds the lock cylinder in place, then pull it straight out.

Just had the same problem in my 77 Blazer.....the lock was coming apart. When I got it out several of the spring were coming out of the backside of the lock.

That tool is used to depress the steering lock plate just far enough to remove the keeper ring.
Bought one several years back from my locksmith supply house. Mine came with two differnt main shafts for different vehicles (threads are different) It's worth every cent even if you don't use it very often.

It's called a lock plate remover. They sell them pretty cheap at all the chain auto parts stores or even harbor freight.

I would replace the switch on top of the column first. I was having a real hard time getting mine to turn over far enough to engage the switch and it turned out to be the 12.00 switch. It is located on top of the column under the dash. I bought a new one at NAPA and they had it in stock. All you have to do is un plug it and loosen a couple of screws.

I just did this as well. I also replaced the wiper/cruise/blinker lever and the blinker switch inside the column. What a pain!
I used this guide. It is for a fiero, but it looks the same as mine. Follow it up to the pic that is labeled "lock cylinder screw" and "key buzer switch." When you get to that point, remove the lock cylinder screw with a T20 torx screwdriver. The cylinder should slide right out. The pics on the site show the tool you need. http://home.t-online.de/home/O_Scholz/steering.html Slonaker |

No, that didn't happen to mine but the rod that goes to the switch was bending when I tried to engage the switch and it finally got to where I had to use a pair of pliesrs to grab the rod and push on it to get it to start. To me that sounds like that is your problem. I think my switch fell apart when I took it off.
