On my 71 roadster project, I am running a high rise, duel carb intake on the top of the big block, well this looks all gravy but I cant shut the hood..

all the cowl hoods I have looked at, are not funtional cowl hoods, they are regular style with a full skin/frame on the botton and just a raised 2 inch cowl. First problem is cutting into the frame of the hood, second issue is that 2 inches of a cowl still wont be enough. 2 inches is the highest steel cowl I can find for any 67-68 or 69-72.

so I have thought about adding a scoop on the hood, or maybe just having the air cleaner come up through it, or even getting one of those bling bling chrome scoops the have the little doors on them.

any ideas?

I want to shoot the paint on this before to long, but I need to get the whole hood thing figured out first. I have 3 67-68 hoods and 2 69-72 hoods to choose from if I decide to make my own set up. But I think am looking to use the 69-72 hood because my grill and crate are near perfect.

any ideas or example would help out a bunch, I want this to look clean and not choped up or getto! I dont want to wind up slapping my self, I do like the idea of not having to spend 400 bucks for a cowl hood though!

I say cut the hood and slap a bug catcher in top.
As far as the hood choice goes...if you do the later hood, you DO kn ow you'll need newer fenders and rad support...right?

I've never seen a tunnel ram and velocity stacks fit under a stock hood (or a cowl hood for that matter).
Cut the hood, bolt on the t-ram, and be the cruise-night king!

Do you have to use the stacks??? Are you going to use a 67-68 hood on a 69-72 clip?? Is it going to be modified to fit? I've always wanted to see someone modify one to fit a 69-72.

If you want it to have a nasty attitude, then you have no choice. Cut the hood, and put one of Shotgun Bill's scoops on top of that T-ram set up.....

USBODYSOURCE.COM sells fiberglass race weight 4" cowl hood for 399.00. I know you said you didn't want to spend the $ but it might be an option.

sorry if I stated that wrong,

I have 67-68 front clips and 69-72 front clips, my 72 grill is in amazing shape though so I want to use it.

I just noticed a post with a tunnel ram on a small block, cool to see it but I am not diggin the hood, mybe I could do it like the old shacker hoods?? I def like the idea of the hilborn or shot gone scoop!

just plain old school cool

Cut the hood and ley it hang out ........so to speak.

Or you could use a mailbox like a friend of mine did.His Nova was green and the Joplin Globe mailbox was green and well it worked I guess

It was hilarious to see this Nova with a mailbox for a scoop.It ran mid 10's on the NOS though.

my idea for a cowl hood was start witha 72, then graft on a raised portion made from the 67. it would retain the center "peak", and you could stiffen it as needed. maybe not enough slope to the 67 for it too look right, but you never know. maybe some photochop work would help with the visualization.

as side note, my 72 hood doesnt have any supports that would interfear with cutting a hole, the supports run in a v shape towards the back, but nothing over the carb. i second the need for velocity stacks. why not go with an oval aircleaner or something not so tall? how much room are we talkin here? do you need 4", 6, 8? if you are bound and determined to cut a hole, i say go for the shotgun scoop! those are so freakin mean! in a copy of streetrodder they had a 40's willys with a hemi and a shotgun scoop in the hood, with the hood moulded around it so it didnt just stick out there. bad ass, no doubt!
