another issue... inner axle on 71 D44
ok, i got my hub figured out, and test drove it and it makes much less noise than it did before, but now it sounds like theres noise coming from the drivers side. i looked at the u-joint and its moves from front to rear about 1/8"
its not the u-joint, it looks like the axle and stub axle are moving with it. are there more bearings inside the axle? like a rear has??? anyway, its a light "clunk" noise when i hit a bump, and isnt any louder or quiet when in 2wd or 4wd im really getting tired of this... first the hub is bad, now this... and just when i really need the truck, first week of school, and the first snow of the ![]() |

there's a bearing in the back of the spindle, that the outer shaft engages.

well i figured everything out...
i ended up with 1 new hub 2 new rotors new brake pads all new wheel bearings 2 new "stub axle" bearings 1 new stub axle and a new socket i didnt have before.... and i spent about $275 and i couldnt get the stock lockout into the new hub, so i am now sporting i superwinch lockout... and 1 factory lockout. i think i'm gonna get a set of warn lockouts soon |

Sounds like you keep putting money into it, but never get anywhere.

BurnoutNova, once you go through every assembly on your truck, you will no longer have a "lemon." You will have a dependable truck that you know every inch of. So keep at it.

You just learned everything about an outer axle rebuild.Should be no big deal, now. Those problems can occur on any 30+year old drivetrain. What`s worse is if you run worn axle u-joints & spindle bearings while 4-wheeling,the joint can break and instantaniously egg-out or break the yokes on the axle shafts. What problem did you have with installing the OEM hub?Getting the snap-ring on the stub axle? That can be tough, seem impossible, with all that new stuff and grease in there. At least you didn`t need a spindle.Seems like whenever I end-up w/o 4wd,it snows.

Threading a bolt into the stub axle end provides a handle to pull the stub axle out as far as it will go which usually solves any snap ring installation difficulties.
