420/465 swap?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello to all.My first post here. Im the owner of a 70' 3/4 ton chevy truck. want to swap out sm 420/t-221 combo with sm465/205. does any one know if there will be any issues. I noticed the 465 is longer and a little bigger. Also i have aluminum and cast bellhousings, which would u guys recommend.

Thanks, Ryan Martinsburg WV

They both have top covers. I think? the 465 has a larger diameter nose cone, so you may have to go with the aluminum bellhousing

your '70 should not have a 420, '67 was the last year for it. sounds like a p/o swapped out the 465/205 combo you want and put that in. at any rate, it wont be an involved project...i was in the process of swapping my 221 out for a 205, and all I had to do was move the crossmember back a few inches. that was when a lot of other stuff went wrong with my truck, so I parked it. havent had the driveshafts redone yet.

Not sure about the 420 being in there. This truck was set up to pull, but the frame was not all butchered up so im gonna put it back on the street. I took apart the 465 last nite. The gears and bearings are a little rusty but they arent torn up that i can see. The truck should be pretty tough when i get it done. Like i said its a 70/ 3/4 ton, dana 60 rear and dana 44 front with drum brakes that i hope to do away with. But thanks for all the help.

Those 3/4 ton 1970 drums are a pain to find! Does the tranny you have in the truck have 2 pto covers, reverse is right and down?
