ram horn pics

Can anyone direct me to pics of different types of ram horn manifolds and their applications? I've seen a couple of pics in different places but without complete applications. I know some have generator mounts cast into them and I think some don't. Some have straight down dumps and some angled. Do the angled ones work for 67 to 72 trucks?
I read in a post below some are being reproduced but outside the US.
I'd like to know what years to look for when I go to the salvage yards.
I have an 88 350 in my 69 with T350, headers on it right now but they will be coming off in favor of ram horns.
I think Eastwood sells a manifold paint that looks good. Anyone used this and how well does it last? thanks.

Rear dump manfolds were used on 2wd trucks, and straight dumps were used on 4X4's. I have a whole damn collection of them out in the shed. The rarest ones I've seen are the rear dumps with the altnernator mount cast in 'em, I just picked one up at the junkyard for $25 in awesome shape two days ago.

Hi Robert. Thanks for replying.
So the angled dump is correct for the 2 WD trucks. Do some not have the generator/ alternator mount cast in them? Can that mount be ground off? I am using a later engine with alternator mount on the right side.
How are the corvette horns configured? straight dump?
What are the chances of replacing the old studs without breaking them off in the manifold or extracting them when they are already broken off? slim?
When did they start with the a i r smog manifolds? thanks. Boog

i replaced the studs on the angle dump ramhorns on the 67, it wasnt hard at all, none were broken off though, its a good idea to do them when they arent in the truck cause it would be a ***** to do them down the road. id take the time and it them now then you know your set and everything will go together nice-all your nuts will spin on and no hassles

I don't know anything about the corvette rams, but I think they started using AIR Injection in '69, not all of the ram horns have these holes in 'em. If yours have the alternator mount cast in to them I wouldn't grind it off, it would be worth something to someone looking for one. I'll get a bunch of the manifolds I have and take some pics of 'em for you and post 'em. As for the stud replacing it all depends on how rusty they are. If they're rusted in the holes it's a pain in the a$$ to replace.

Straight or angled should be fine in your truck. I only know my 67 has straight downs to clear the clutch linkage and it is a 2wd.

Here's one of the angle dump driver's side ramhorn with the alternator mount. I pulled it off of an all original '68 C10 2wd with either a 283 or 327SB and a 4 speed.

Just for reference here is a pic of a pair of Corvette 2 1/2" ram horns. They are the largest and best flowing of all the ram horn manifolds. These have had the bracket cut off....

Those look really good Ken. I don't think I will be persueing the vette manifolds, probably too high for me, but I've got a line on a couple of sets of truck horns. I will cut off that mount and smooth them up though. I hope I can make them look as good as so many I've seen. Nice painted up engine with crusty manifolds looks awful. Thank you guys.

N2TRUX will those vette manifolds work on a 2wd truck? No problems fabricating the exhaust? I would like a set but was concerned when all the truck rams I saw were all angled...figured must be for clearance??

You can still get the 2 1/2 inch manifolds from GM, part number 3797901, $108 ea. Shipping is kinda high $50 each, but was still cheaper than buying from local Chevy dealer $174.00 plus tax.

It is the left hand with the generator mount, get two and grind off the gen mount, they will fit both sides. You can get a right side with the heat hole for the choke but it is more expensive. The dump is straight down but doesn't extend as far as stock truck manifolds. I have two but have not installed as I am uncertain how I want to run my exhaust.

I have used the black Eastwood manifold paint on heads and manifolds. It works as a rust preventative and high-heat capable paint that won't burn off even near the exhaust ports, but it does not insulate the manifolds from heat and lower engine compartment temps the way ceramic-metallic coatings (HPC, Jet-Hot) do. And it is difficult to coat the inside of manifold with Eastwood manifold paint (I didn't bother). Check around some of the larger cities in Arkansas for locals who do ceramic-metallic coating inside and out of manifolds. Should be much cheaper than HPC, Jet-Hot, etc with no shipping charges.

Yes, they will fit. I have seen a couple sets mounted and they work just fine. You might have to clearence the frame a little around the flange, but that's about it....

Boog, I have removed old studs by heating the ear where the stud screws into the manifold with success, just be careful not to get the stud too hot or it will twist off. I try to direct the heat up away from the stud, trying to just heat the manifold, yes, the heat will be absorbed by the stud also, but get the manifold heated and try to turn the stud out before it(the stud) gets cherry red. Never had much luck getting them out once they twist off, have got a couple but odds are better before they break off. Good Luck, Gord

Stock 4x4 manifolds dump in the center and go straight down.
The pictures are of the manifolds I took off my 4x4, coated with the Eastwoods exhaust manifold paint, and put back on my new engine. I have no idea if these are stock because my truck was a mutt when I got it. The part numbers are fishy. It would be interesting if somebody with a known stock pair has the same numbers.

One thing that would lead me to believe they are stock like is that I ordered the LMC exhaust kit and it bolted up with no problems.

The new LMC catalog was in the mail box this week. CB.39 on the front cover. The "performance exhaust" kit is $180 for stock - behind the tire exit - tail pipes, $220 for the straight back rear exit pipes. The glass pack "kit" is $150 stock and $200 rear exit.

I think when I bought my kit three years ago they offered a different muffler. I went with what I thought would be the quietest muffler in the catalog.

The only difficulty I had in installing it was removing the old stuff. A saws-all would have been real handy for removing it. Putting the kit on my 4x4 was easy because I can roll under there without any jacks. Just don't tighten any clamps until you have it all pieced together.

I've said it before on this forum and I'll say it again. For the money LMC offers the best exhaust kit out there for us back yarders. I don't work for LMC or the company that makes the exhaust for them. I'm just a satisfied customer.
