Smashed finger, tips on rear coil removal
I'm attempting to replace my rear coils, until I smashed my finger. Hers the problem, I got the lower bolts and cups off but I cant seem to get the upper bolt to break loose. Its been soaked in liquid wrench for a couple of days but wont come loose, therefore cheater bar plus 30 years durt and rust=big pain in the a$$. any tips?

Also is the upper nut in the frame rail tack welded in place or do I need to put a wrench on it to hold it in place?

I think I had to hold the top of the bolt when I did mine. You might want to try some heat on the nut while your at it.

Yes, you have to hold the nut. I have to slide a pipe over my ratchet to break the bolt loose.

Heated both those bolts up real good put on the breaker bar with a 5 foot cheater and the bolts just sheared right off. The spring cups were rusted to the frame nothing a cold chisel couldnt take care of. I was able to squeeze the old springs by hand about half inch. That shouldn't be right.

Yeah, they were some really worn springs. compared them to the new ones and the new ones dont even budge. the aux leaf springa would slam down on the rear of the control arms every time I went over a bump. Hopefully not any more, I put in some 3/4 ton springs back there. Next is the front end any body have any tips on doing that. I;m gonna do everything up there, springs,balljoints,control arm shafts, tie rod ends...

heres a tip for ya, i drilled a hole the size of my extension through the frame above the nut, (gotta have the bed off) then put socket on nut, run extension through hole and connect, made life a lot easier.

Thats a good idea. But I didn't have the bed off. Wish I did though, could have cleaned and painted some stuff. Another question, Are there supposed to be pads between the frame and bed on a steel bed? Mine are missing. Trying to get rid of rattles and clicks.

Having gone thru all of the afore mentioned trials and tribulations I found that best prices (and availability) for replacements for rusted out parts, like spring cups, U-bolts, and all proper fasteners, etc. is, believe it or not LMC!!

Rustfree.. I believe you are right about the LMC prices. I'd been looking for a kit to do the suspension front and rear and LMC had the lowest price and they are about an hours drive from me. Chevy duty has the same kit but about $150 more. They are close to me too.(free shipping,I get to go pick it up)I figure most suppliers get their parts from the same place so you just need to find the best prices. Except a U bolt I got from LMC in the kit was crooked. No big deal.

I beg to differ with you but we sell MOOG suspension parts only and our in house U-BOLTS are 3/4" dia. with 1" nuts and rolled threads not cut threads,our leaf springs are made to better than G.M factory specs, our a-arms and spring cups are G.M.OEM parts and all our suspension bolts are correct grade 5, our coils are progressive rate and have a lifetime warrantee, all brake parts are wagner. Maybe a little higher in price but who wants junk suspension parts they have to replace in 5 years. Don't risk your life to save a few bucks.These are the parts we use in our customers restoriations and believe me they ride and stop like new trucks.

If I had found this site 4 years ago when I started my 72 swb rodification I could have save money, got better parts and probably finished in half the time. Oh well..it was fun anyway!! And I still have the Longhorn to do
