Squeak and Clang ?

Ok, my truck makes this squeak noise when I drive. More of something spinning that is causing the squeaking.
Second, it "clangs" when I got from reverse to drive (and back and forth and back.......). I had my girl shift back and forth for me so that I could lay down next to the truck and listen to see from where the clang is coming from. Get this... it's coming from in front of the transmission. I don't know where exactly, but it's not a u-joint. I can pretty much rule out everything from the transmission pan back. This is driving me nuts.
And I can't tell if the squeak and clang go together or not since I have to be moving for it to squeak.
What is in front of the trans that could be clanging and squeaking?
Todd

Thumbs up

Sounds can be deceiving. Try putting your truck in neutral and set the park brake. Climb under and see if you can move your driveshaft around. (clockwise/counter-clockwise) Suspect a universal, because of the squeek and the clunk. Maybe even a center support bearing? Hope this helps?

when you say tranny to the back is good are you referring that transmission going to the rear of the truck is good? My first guess was going to be carrier bearing but if you've inspected everything back there I would have a looksy at your flywheel.

I've tried moving the driveshaft. It won't budge. I might as well be a quadropaledric trying to push my truck up mt everest.

Yes, from the transmission pan back to the rear of the truck was quiet. The clang was definitely from in front of the trans pan somewhere, as in from the trans pan to the front bumper, somewhere.
What could be wrong with the flywheel? Is this the "torque converter bolt" thing?
I will check those when I get home tonight.

My speedo cable does squeak sometimes, but this is a very very VERY different squeak.

Ok, I checked the torque converter bolts, and they were tight. What else is up there?

Check your motor mounts. as the torque hits it can rock the engine then drop after initial load. This could also be your squeak or it could be the exhaust mounts making the noise. Just a thought.

I've already changed the motor mounts. It was doing it before and after I replaced them.
Do long tube headers have exhaust mounts?
It clangs pretty loud just sitting there going back and forth between drive and reverse. You'd think it was the u-joints, but after laying under the truck I just don't think they're going out.

Last idea is check the slip joint out of the trans to the carrier.

have you tried taking off the drive shaft to check the bearing inside the caps of the u-joint yet?

I had this same exact problem. I wiggled the drive shaft and it felt tight. I knew my carrier bearing was going bad and needed changed, so while I had it off I checked the U-Joints. They were bad also. Since Ive changed the U-Joints the noise has stopped. I did change the carrier bearing also, but Im pretty positive it was the U-Joints making the clanging noise that was comming from the front of my transmission. Everytime my carrier bearing has gone out it was pretty obvious it was the carrier bearing, you know the banging sound of a flopping drive shaft.

I would bet its the U-Joints, even though the drive shaft feels tight.
