my new 72 · 01-12-2005, 05:36 PM

For some stupid reason my blazer tank is only taking a total of 13 gallons when empty. I ran it out of gas today to check it, so I know for sure it is only taking 13. Any ideas why it would only be filling half way? I am going to drop it this weekend to check it out, but I would rather not have to. It is very strange. Thanks.

Yep sounds like it is not vented correctly...if you don't have the small vent hose on the fill tube hooked up it will cut the pump off

It is vented, in fact, it spills out of the vents at 13.5 gallons. I am going to have to run it empty and drop it to see what the deal is.

Could be that the pick-up tube isn't all the way to the bottom of the tank and only sucking the top 13.5 gal out of it with the other 8.5 gal still in it. Just a guess.......

That would be my guess.
Don't run it dry and go dropping it expecting it to be empty.

Maybe the PO was a bootlegger and has a compartment in the take to hide the booze!When my tank is pretty close to empty it takes 18gal to fill it up.

Or maybe some danged neighborhood kids filled your tank full of rocks and sand....that happened to my dad with his '67 'bird. Or a drug runner filled if full of some smack and it's still in there!!! My other question would be: Have you ever filled this tank up to 22 gal. or do you think it's a 22 gal. tank?

I have indeed put 22 gallons in this tank before. My truck sleeps in the Garage most of the time, but it did spend a few weeks outside while the paint was drying on the Garage floor. But I do know for a fact it is a 22 gallon blazer tank. I was leaning more towards someone putting crap in it. Nice smart ass reply though longhorn man.

Woody has a good point, maybe you can run it "dry" and poke a stick in there and see if it comes up dry (or can you do that on a Blazer tank? That used to be my old method on my in cab tank when my gas guage went bad)

Well, I pulled the tank and found out that the sender float has gas in it showing empty when half full, and one of the fuel filters is clogged and needs replaced. That is why it acted like it was empty. And I emptied 20 gallons out of it.

OK, makes a bit more sense now. When you said you "ran it out of gas" I thought you meant you ran the tank dry, but actually you were going by the fuel gauge.

it seemed to be out of gas because both the gauge read low, and the engine died due to the clogged filter.

Glad you got it figured out! If your filter was plugged bad you may want to check the filter in the carb. In my experience if the filter was plugged bad, some crap did get into my carb. I have an edelbrock 650, to me, they are easy to take apart and clean. I know some carbs are a PITA.

I have two filters inline before the carb. I run an edel. 1411 with one filter before the regulator and one between the reg. and the carb. I will be taking the top off the carb and cleaning it out too.

Saw this Thread and had to share my recent experience with retro tanks. Bought one of those steel blazer tank kits from 'The Truck Shop' in Cali. at Carlisle, put it in behind the rear axle with all the new hardware and sender that came with it. Well, a 72 C20 with a lot of 'rake' (back being about 2.5" higher) must not be the chassis for the guys who make up the sending units. It would never read more than 3/4 full on the gauge, even with gas flowing out the filler neck. Had no problem going all the way to empty, even below empty on the gauge. So one day I pulled the new tank out and took out the sender and bent the float rod so the float went lower into the tank. Did the trick, now when the tank is topped off, the gauge reads very full. Just had to re-learn the hard way where really empty is.

I guess the lesson learned was; don't assume that what you buy aftermarket or even factory is going to be exactly right for 'your' truck.

BTW, anybody else with this tank have trouble with it wanting to feed very slowly?? I've been thinking to try and use the extra fittings at the upper side areas as vents also and sort of 'TEE' them all together to the tube thats welded in to the filler neck?? Do you think this will improve the vent flow?
