power steering box adjustment
I have about an inch of play in my power steering box...(66 c-10 long bed fleet side)
how do I adjust the play out...or could it be worn out? |

Brad, This is a safety issue so you do this at yur own risk! If you look at the top of the gearbox you will see a threaded shaft with a slot in it with a nut at the base. This isn't a large shaft' only about 1/4-5/16" in diameter. Loosen the nut and GENTLY screw the threaded shaft into the gearbox. DO NOT TIGHTEN! When you feel it barely touch, back it off a hair (about 1/8th turn)then tighten nut. Be sure to hold the shaft with a screwdriver so it doesn't move when you tighten the nut. If, after this, your steering is sloppy you either have a worn gearbox or worn suspension parts. Before doing the gearbox, I'd jack the vehicle up, place on good jack stands on flat, level, firm surface (DO NOT USE JACK ONLY FOR THIS) and try to wiggle the tires top and bottom, and side to side, then in and out to test suspension wear first. Good luck and BE SAFE!

What he said, but jack the front of the truck up until the wheels are off the ground.
Tighten the adjustment screw until it is snug. Then go and turn the steering wheel all the way left and all the way right and then back to the center. It should be easiy to turn but with little slack. Keep doing this until the slack is gone. Don't forget to tighten the jam nut. 67 Ben |

Do you tighten up the jam nut before you turn the steering wheel all the way left and all the way right and then back to the center?
