Greetings!

After being a avid lurker, i decided to register, i have a beast that is my current and forever project, she's a 69' GMC 1500, also my very first vehicle (I'm 18 Btw), im going through a semi-resto/clean up with it, lemme see if i can get a couple pics posted, My dad loves to pile stuff on my truck so you may need to concentrate hard in order to pic out the truck from the crap.
Pictures may be kindaout of proportion, i had to use paint to edit them, its got a REALLY tired 350, and leaky TH400, they both prefer changing their own oil, the axle in one of the picture laying under the truck is a Ford 9'' that i hope i can get to bolt up, because the current axle on the truck was KIA when my brother failed to properly execute a brake stand, dont ask me how he did it, but the gears exploded out of the pumpkin soo...

I'll keep you guys updated as i go along, but so far, this is what i've done (with a little help from my dad, brother, and friend)

disconnected and pulled engine (had to pull off the hood for clearance reasons of course)
pulled TQ Converter (didnt know how much they weighed when full of ATF...)
pulled tranny
removed front bumper and delivered it to a dumpster
removed rear, im still not sure what i want to do with it, its the bench style that wraps around about a foot of the bed, worried about if i ever get rear ended cause it would take out the bed as well, dad says to cut off the "wings" of the bumper, but ive been thinking of grabbing a catalog and getting its smaller chrome cousin, eventually gonna mount the spare in the bed somewhere, maybe even relocate the behind the seat gas tank someday, heater and A/C cables are broken gotta fix those... the bench seat can stay hidden under a cover for now, gotta rake a couple hundred lawns if you know what i mean heh.

Forgot to add, Ive saved up quite a bit from my past jobs and holiday cash in general, went junkyard scrounging the other day and found a pristine 350 block, my dad says its special in someway but i forgot what he said, high content of zinc? not sure, but anyway, had it bored .20 over, bought a package high performace deal from a local machine shop, comp cams xtreme energy, Kieth Black pistons, new (reconditioned i should say) Crank balanced, reconditioned rods, the heads off the old engine were double humps, but i found out they had a terminal case of port cracking, found a pair of stock heads in my shed (from my dads old rodding days) the machine shop offered to teach me how to port and polish them, i thought it was pretty awsome, i gasket matched them (HUGE ports!!) the shop checked em and cleaned them all up, my oil pan is toast so i added that to my "To Buy" list, i was originally gonna use my old manifolds, my dad told me they were the best manifold Chevy produced? ram horns i think he called them, turns out the PO of my truck tried to repair a crack in the right manifold but he was a bad welder, so im not sure what kind of exhaust i will use, possible headers i dunno, torker 2 manifold (cast aluminum style) off the old engine, i cleaned it up and polished it a bit, has a little bit of shine to it, i bought a practicly new Q-Jet off of a race boat guy that lives down the street, he said it had never been run and was new, appears that it is, and for the end of my rambling im trying to get bed a little straighter, the PO liked to throw stuff into the bed and the rails are pretty dinged up, tailgate is toast also. *Rant Off* :P

Why do you say that about the 9 inch? ive always been told they were a great axle, i dont really have much of a choice right now, the old one on my truck looks like a bomb went off in it. I am actually about 25% redneck i guess, i grew up in Pollock Pines, the Hick capitol of California.

Exille,

We all run whatever we have or can afford at the time, my high school hotrod was early '47 Chevy 1/2ton that had a few OMC parts, (Outboard Marine Corp) since Dad was a boat mech at the time and $$ was tight. My basic point is that since you came onto a GMC/CHEVY site and are PROUD of your GM truck, then why not keep it GM? By saying that the furd 9 is "good" I assume you mean good as in strong. GM axles can be made strong too. You will never catch me putting honda parts on my Harley just because they are shiney or good. I call it Pride in Ownership while other call it Brand-Loyality. I think that many folks here on this board have that pride and loyalty, just look at how they show off their pics, brag & kid each other. SO... be warned that myself and others may kid ya about the "furd parts", but in the end it's your rig, do whatever trips yer trigger!
Happy Building

exile, looks like a great start! good luck with it! i would probably ditch the 9 inch, too. it's not hard to find a regular truck 12 bolt or 14 if youre 3/4 ton in the JY. lots easier to get in. no messing with welding perches and conversion u-joints.

welcome from spokane.

i wouldn't ditch the 9" - they sell pretty good @ swapmeets.

you can put it in, you'll just have to cut the perches off and weld new ones on....not that big of a deal (well if' you've done it before i guess)

that's really cool that your machineshop was willing to show you how to port heads and stuff...great learning experience
