Look at the plug that goes into the back of the gauge package. If the second space is blank its a full gauge..if a third space is blank its a idiot gauge. Thats a general quick look...you really have to know what your looking at overall...there are difference in plugs and wires between standard 4 speed tranny , 3 speed tranny and automatic tranny harnesses on the inside also.

The blank space is on different sides..but generally a 2nd space or 3rd space is a quick look guess between the 2 types.

Basically an auto has 2 purple wires to a plug for neutral safety switch.

3 speed has greens and yellow perhaps to reverse switch only.

4 speed has a wire to tranny.

Also 67 and 68 have harness fuse blocks that mounts sideways.

Takes a bit but I can grab and know what I have in hand.

I think you meant position 2 blank or position 4 instead of 2 or 3.
Another quick method is to check if the solid black ground wire to the top of the plug in has the blank slot on the same side of the plug or the opposite. If its the same side of plug you are an idiot light and opposite sides you are loaded with gages!

If I remember correctly, from the GM parts book I am sure the starter harness is different between manual and the automatic but I believe the headlight charging circuit is the same. And if it has the electric type of auto kickdown used a turbo 400 type, it would have it's own single feed wire seperate from the harness. So the kickdown is not the issue.
