If the front brakes are drum it's not a true 71. either the cab/front clip/frame/title etc... has been swapped at some point. All 71 and 72 should have disks. I can't remember if 69-70 was standard or an option.

Any 2WD half-ton through '70 was all four-wheel drums, all six-lug. Starting in '71, they went to front disc and five-lugs - no option for either, just a year-by-year.

that is correct.
Either some one installed drums on your 71 (WHY?? )or the 71 cab has been installed on an older chassis and sold per vin...or the vin it's self was swapped out.

About 16 years ago when I first got my 67 there was a guy that worked with my brother. He had a 71 with 6 lug drum brakes I asked him if it was a 69 or 70 with a 71 or 72 grille. He said it was a early 71 built on a leftover 70 chassis. At the time I believed him, but now I don't know. How would he know that anyway? Sometimes the parts cross years as GM ran out of parts or had parts left over. But really how would you know unless you had bought the truck new and knew it had never been swapped out.

From what I've heard a 71 should have 5 lug discs up front. Who knows what was swapped on any of these old trucks we buy (my 71 GMC 1/2 ton 2WD I just bought has 5 lug discs on the front with 6 lug drums on the rear?). My guess is your frame is older than 71.
