She's parked.

Well, i had to make the call. Red has been running like terds for a month or so, and getting worse. Been missing real bad, has gotten so bad it won't idle even after up to full operating temp. Ain't holding oil pressure like it should, especially in the cold and with 10w30. Much lower than it usually is for some reason. Guess 'cause of poor idle. Our first guess is the distributor cap and plug wires/plugs cause this thing eats em, and i just put all that stuff on new in Aug. And this cold weather isn't helping, with a rigged up manual choke that i don't bother with, it bogs in the cold, adding to the hastle. Undriveable below 55 degrees. The missing has gotten so bad it sounds like when we had 2 plugwires backwards for like 30 seconds, like a lumpy cam. Sounds horrible, especially through that rotten muffler and clogged up cat. Its gettin too much. The carb is toast, outta adjustment, float sticks, won't start for sh!t. I'm going through a tank a gas a week with average driving, something we can't afford in the first place. Brake pads been squealin', gonna need new pads before much longer, hasn't had a brake job since before i started driving it. And i learned to drive on it, and i already gave my sis a few lessons on her.

So, this afternoon, i gave her a good long ride, and I parked her in front of the shed (pictured in my avatar) so my parent's vehicles aren't blocked. Set the parking brake, and cleaned her out. I don't know how long itll be like this, me and my dad might play with everything when it warms up this weekend, so it could be i bring Red back to life this weekend, or it could be Easter. Or later. We got the timing set, might tackle that and the electrical crap, and a battery this weekend, but that's money we don't have. Also got radiator hoses, and antifreeze, and i'll get belts too. The shotgun approach has always worked in the past, no sense in doin' any different. I've spent close to a grand so far on parts, and i'm no closer than where i started.
Kinda disheartening. My truck is most of my life, and putting her to rest; it isn't right. of course ill crank her on sunday afternoons, tool around the block, but i think its the end of daily driving.

Well, that's my rant for the time being, i guess. Sorry to bring anyone down to my little world I'll still fumble around here, and maybe learn even more while i wait. And keep that pride.

If I can help with parts, lemme know I've got a good carb sittin around that isn't doing anything, I'd be willing to part with it for the cost of shipping. Has an electric choke, and was rebuilt very recently. I've also got a spare HEI that I could toss in with that carb The carb is a Q-jet, and the HEI is still on my DD right now, has a brand new module / pickup coil The cap isn't brand new, but is good, same with the coil. Like the carb, it'll cost you shipping If you discover the cam is shot, I've got a stock one from my 350 that would come with lifters and a NOS timing chain. Not sure if it'll work in the 305 or not, but if it will, you can have it

I know what its like to have your baby down under the weather, and I'm willin to help you get your truck on the road at my own cost, cause I know you are a good guy and deserve it

I'm new to the board, but I must say,Russel you are a heck of a pal.I must assume that cliffsta is a teenager, and I really like the fact that you fellas are willing to help the kid out with parts for free.I'm very amused at his post, but I offer these words of encouragement:I'm 28,and still own my first truck,an 82 chevy C-10.It started out a half ton longbed with a 305.It's been a little of everything, from it's beginning,to a 4x4,to a 1 ton, shortbed 4x4 with a nasty bigblock. Now it's back to being a 2wd,but still a shortbed with a bigblock, just a much milder one.Just remember, trucks that are paid for are much better than ones with a payment. And you can do a whole lotta stuff to your truck every month for what truck payments usually cost.NEVER GIVE UP.And if you get tired of it,make it what you want. These trucks are so interchangable, that it's hard to make an irreversible modification!

I drive a nice 2000 VW everyday so my truck doesn't have to get the mileage put on her, but I still love driving my truck just as much, but having the A/C (well not right now) is nice, and the fuel mileage is way better and its way more comfortable for long drives, but it just doesn't sound as cool or look as cool.

I had to sit in the driveway and stare at my truck when I first got it, I had the transmission and transfer case out for a rebuild, sucked just having it sit there for weeks while I worked on it and couldn't drive, then it sucked more when I put the transmission in and one of the bolt ears broke off and I had to pull it to have it fixed, then it didn't work right, pulled it again, and pulled the valve body numerous times until I figured out the problem was my 2-4 servo didn't get enagaged into the power band when I installed it and the boost valve wasn't all the way in

Ditto what blue beard said. If you read carefully, me and my dad are supposed to tear into some things potentially this weekend.
